NIO's European operations have undergone significant restructuring. The company fired its Germany chief in early 2026 after monthly registrations fell to a single unit, and is transitioning from direct sales to a distributor model. Service is handled through a limited number of NIO service centres and mobile technicians. Owners at a 2026 customer event in the Netherlands reported waiting up to two months for simple parts like parking sensors, despite NIO's DHL logistics partnership. Software updates arrive approximately every six months, with the next major release not expected until Q4 2026. For used car buyers, this means any repair requiring NIO-specific parts could involve extended downtime. Independent EV workshops can handle general maintenance (brakes, tires, suspension) but cannot service NIO-specific systems like the battery swap interface or ADAS hardware.

In February 2026, NIO recalled 246,229 vehicles in China, the largest recall by a Chinese EV maker, to fix a software issue causing brief blackouts of the instrument cluster and central display. During the blackout, drivers lose access to speed readings, fault warnings, and defogging/defrosting functions. The fix is delivered via OTA update (Aspen 3.5.6, Alder 2.1.0, or newer). While the recall primarily targeted NT1.0 models (ES8, ES6, EC6 built 2018-2023), the ET5 has also received display-related software patches. European-delivered ET5s may or may not have received all updates depending on the software version installed. Verify the current software version and whether all OTA updates have been applied.

The ET5's Aquila sensor array includes a LiDAR, seven cameras, five radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. Despite this comprehensive hardware, the software that interprets sensor data has documented weaknesses. Professional reviewers noted that the system tends to misinterpret parked vehicles as frontal obstacles and brakes abruptly, fails to recognise curves or traffic lights in advance (approaching at full speed), and offers jerky lane-keeping assistance. The cost risk arises if a sensor component fails out of warranty: individual LiDAR units, cameras, or radar modules are NIO-specific parts with limited European availability. NIO continues to refine the ADAS software through OTA updates, but progress in Europe lags behind China by several months.

NIO recalled 997 ET5 units manufactured between September 7 and October 10, 2022, because the front shock tower could deform in a severe frontal collision and crush the high-voltage wiring harness, potentially causing a short circuit. NIO retrofitted affected vehicles with a high-strength insulating protective cover free of charge. This only affects very early production cars from the first weeks of ET5 manufacturing. Verify with NIO using the VIN whether this recall applies and has been completed.

Several European owners have reported the charge port lock pin not releasing after a charging session, leaving the cable trapped. NIO released an OTA update intended to fix this, but some owners continue to experience the issue intermittently. The workaround involves re-plugging the charger and cycling the vehicle lock/unlock. If the mechanical latch fails, replacement requires a NIO-specific part. Cold weather appears to increase the likelihood of this problem occurring.

NIO used short-term registrations (Kurzzeitzulassungen) to reclassify unsold inventory as near-new vehicles at steep discounts, with the ET5 available from around €30,850 versus an original list price of approximately €49,000. This has flooded the German used market with essentially new cars at prices that undercut private sellers. Combined with NIO's declining European sales (down 89% in Germany year-over-year), uncertain brand future in the region, and the announcement that no model updates will reach Europe before late 2027, resale values have fallen sharply. A 2023 ET5 with 45,000 km can be found for under €30,000. While depreciation is not a repair cost, it is a significant financial risk for anyone buying at current prices and planning to resell within a few years.
