This is the most significant ownership risk for the ET5 in Europe. NIO partnered with DHL in 2024 for parts logistics from a hub in the Netherlands, but owners still report waiting up to two months for simple parts like parking sensors. NIO has also announced it will not build new swap stations or charging infrastructure in Europe, and no model updates will arrive until late 2027. The company is transitioning from direct sales to a distributor model. In practical terms, this means any repair that requires NIO-specific parts (door handle mechanisms, ADAS sensors, interior trim pieces) can involve extended vehicle downtime. The cost range reflects not just the part itself but potential rental car expenses during lengthy repair waits. In April 2026, only 45 NIO vehicles were registered across all ten European markets.

The ET5 uses electronically actuated flush door handles that pop out when the vehicle is unlocked. These handles have a mechanical backup (inner handle) for emergencies, but the electronic pop-out mechanism can fail due to ice buildup, moisture ingress, or actuator wear. This is a known issue across many EVs with flush handles (Tesla, Hyundai, Kia), but NIO-specific parts availability in Europe makes it more problematic. The handles retract automatically after 20 seconds and can be reactivated by touching the sensing region. A single handle actuator replacement typically costs around €300-500 for parts, but with NIO's limited European parts supply, the actual repair timeline may extend significantly.

NIO recalled 246,229 vehicles in February 2026 to address an issue where the instrument cluster and central control screen could briefly go black, eliminating display of speed, fault warnings, and defogging controls. While this recall covers older ES8, ES6, and EC6 models (NT1.0 platform), the ET5 on the NT2.0 Banyan operating system has also experienced software instability. European owners report that major OTA updates arrive only once or twice per year, and the next significant software update is not expected until Q4 2026. The Banyan system has received 19 OTA updates since the European launch in late 2022, totaling around 450 optimizations, but phantom braking and navigation issues persist. Most software issues are resolved via OTA at no cost, but a service center visit for persistent problems can incur diagnostic fees.

The ET5 is equipped with NIO's Aquila sensing system including a roof-mounted LiDAR, 7 cameras (including 8 megapixel high-resolution units), 5 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. After any windshield replacement, front-end collision repair, or sensor area disturbance, the ADAS system requires professional recalibration. Given NIO's limited authorized service points in Europe, this recalibration can only be performed at specific locations, potentially requiring the car to be transported. The LiDAR unit itself is an expensive component if damaged. While outright sensor failure is uncommon, the cost and logistics of recalibration in Europe are elevated compared to more established brands.

Like many modern EVs, the ET5 has numerous always-on systems (connectivity modules, security monitoring, battery management) that draw power from the 12V auxiliary battery. If the vehicle sits unused for more than 2-3 weeks without being plugged in, the 12V battery can drain sufficiently to prevent the car from starting or responding to the key. NIO recommends keeping the vehicle plugged in when parked for extended periods. The 12V battery replacement itself is straightforward and costs around €150-250, but if it fails while the car is away from home, recovery costs can add up. Maintaining a regular charging routine largely prevents this issue.

NIO recalled 997 ET5 units produced between September 7, 2022 and October 10, 2022 because in a severe frontal collision, the shock tower could deform and compress the high-voltage wiring harness, potentially causing a short circuit. NIO retrofitted affected vehicles with a high-strength insulating protective cover free of charge. This recall applies only to a small production window, and later production vehicles are not affected. If buying a 2022 ET5, verify with NIO using the VIN that this recall has been completed.
