While no widespread failure pattern has emerged yet (the car is relatively new), air suspension components are known weak points across all premium SUVs that use them. NIO confirmed that two ET7 owners experienced complete power loss while driving, traced to the low-voltage battery charging module (DC-DC converter). The same NT 2.0 platform underlies the EL7. When the DC-DC converter fails, the 12V system loses charge, disabling the dashboard, drive system, brakes, and hazard lights simultaneously. NIO issued software update 1.0.1b to improve fault warnings, but the underlying hardware vulnerability remains. A 12V battery replacement costs around €200-300. If the DC-DC converter itself needs replacement, costs can reach €800-1,500 including parts and labor. Keeping the vehicle plugged in when parked for extended periods helps maintain the 12V system.

NIO's European software rollout lags significantly behind China. Owners report waiting six months between updates, with the April 2025 update primarily adding language support for new markets rather than fixing existing bugs. NIO reportedly told European owners there was no budget for bug fixes. Specific complaints include phantom braking from the ADAS system, malfunctioning child detection alerts flooding owners with SMS messages, the NOMI voice assistant failing to respond when audio is playing, and navigation routing taking unnecessary detours. While software issues do not always carry a direct repair cost, some ADAS-related bugs may require dealer visits for sensor recalibration (€100-500). The advanced ADAS software available in China (New World Model) is not expected to reach Europe until around 2030.

Despite NIO's February 2025 partnership with DHL for European aftermarket logistics (based at a facility in Holtum, Netherlands), owners still report extended wait times for parts. Simple components like parking sensors have taken up to two months to arrive. This is not a direct monetary cost in most cases, but it means extended vehicle downtime after minor incidents or component failures. For used buyers without the NIO subscription (which includes courtesy cars), this can translate to rental car costs of €30-50 per day. A two-week wait for parts could cost €400-700 in rental fees alone. This risk is inherent to any niche brand with limited European presence and is unlikely to improve significantly in the near term, given NIO's stated plan not to expand European infrastructure.

A key selling point of the EL7 is battery swap capability, but NIO has announced it will not build new swap stations in Europe and will not reduce BaaS pricing in Germany (the most expensive market). The company closed its Danish swap station in 2025, marking the first European facility shutdown. Only about 60 stations exist across Europe, concentrated in Norway and Germany. For used buyers considering the BaaS model, this means the swap network may shrink rather than grow. With a 75 kWh battery offering approximately 335 km real-world range, reliance on conventional charging (11 kW AC, up to 140 kW DC) is the practical reality for most European owners. The BaaS subscription costs €169/month for the 75 kWh battery, an ongoing cost that should be factored into ownership budgets if the battery is not owned outright.

Chinese EV brands including NIO show lower resale values compared to established European competitors, according to vehicle history data providers. The EL7 is particularly affected because NIO has announced no model updates for Europe until late 2027, meaning the current EL7 will be technologically outdated against refreshed competitors. NIO's European sales have been very low (the brand failed to register a single vehicle in the Netherlands for the first time since market entry). For used buyers, this heavy depreciation can be an opportunity at purchase, but it means the car will continue losing value faster than an equivalent Audi e-tron, BMW iX3, or Tesla Model Y. This is not a direct repair cost but is a significant ownership consideration.
