NIO ET7 100 kWh Mk1

In June 2022, two ET7 owners reported sudden and complete power loss while driving. The vehicle lost all electrical systems including brakes (power assist), hazard lights, and instrument cluster. The root cause was identified as a failure of the low-voltage battery charging module (DC-DC converter). NIO released a software update (version 1.0.1b) to improve fault detection and warning for all ET7s delivered from June 13, 2022 onward, with older cars receiving the fix via OTA. NIO described this as a low-probability event, but the consequences are severe because the vehicle can lose all power within 10-15 minutes of the module failing. Verify the software update has been applied on any pre-June 2022 car.

The ET7 uses a sophisticated air suspension with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) that adjusts height by 50mm and recalculates damping hundreds of times per second. While NIO's system is relatively new and long-term failure data is limited, air suspension systems in general are known to develop compressor wear and air spring leaks after 60,000-100,000 km. Replacement parts for NIO-specific components are not widely available through independent channels in Europe. If a strut leaks, the compressor overworks and eventually burns out, potentially requiring both to be replaced. Expect specialist NIO service centre work only, as independent garages lack diagnostics and parts access.

NIO's European sales have plummeted from a peak of roughly 2,365 units in 2023 to single digits per month in early 2026. The company fired its German operations chief in February 2026 after selling just one vehicle in January. The previously unified Nio Europe department has been split into six units, and the company has shifted toward a distributor model rather than direct sales. This creates genuine risk for existing owners: parts supply chains could slow, service centre coverage may contract, and specialist diagnostic equipment may become harder to access. Unlike established manufacturers with decades of European infrastructure, NIO's support commitment depends on a company still finding its footing in the market. This is not a mechanical failure but a structural ownership risk that can significantly inflate repair costs and wait times.

Like many modern EVs with extensive always-on electronics (LiDAR, cameras, connected services), the ET7's 12V auxiliary battery can drain within 7-14 days if the car is not driven or plugged in. The numerous sensors in the Aquila system (33 sensing units including LiDAR, cameras, and radars) contribute to parasitic drain. A depleted 12V battery prevents the car from starting or responding to the app. Keep the car plugged in when parked for extended periods, or use a trickle charger connected to the 12V system. Replacement 12V batteries cost €200-400 depending on sourcing.

The ET7 features NIO's Aquila Super Sensing system with 33 units: a roof-mounted Innovusion LiDAR, 11 high-resolution cameras, 5 millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and positioning units. While outright sensor failure is uncommon, any collision repair, windscreen replacement, or front-end work can require expensive recalibration of the entire sensor suite. The roof-mounted LiDAR is particularly vulnerable to damage and costly to replace. Independent repair shops generally cannot perform these calibrations, requiring NIO service centre involvement. Given NIO's thin European network, this can mean extended wait times.

NIO delivers frequent over-the-air software updates through their Banyan operating system. While most updates improve functionality, early ET7 owners reported that updates could temporarily affect charging behaviour, navigation accuracy, or ADAS features. In February 2026, NIO recalled 246,229 vehicles (primarily ES8, ES6, and EC6, not ET7) for a software issue that caused instrument cluster and centre screen blackouts. While the ET7 was not part of this specific recall, it runs on the same platform architecture. European OTA updates have historically lagged behind Chinese releases. Most software issues are resolved without cost, but diagnosis and manual intervention at a service centre may incur labour charges.
