The 1.9 TiD was the volume diesel in the second-generation 9-3, using a Fiat-derived Z19DTH four-cylinder also found in the Opel Vectra C and Alfa Romeo 159. It delivers 150 hp and 320 Nm through a six-speed manual or the Aisin AF40 six-speed automatic. As an orphan brand since 2012, parts availability remains surprisingly good thanks to GM platform sharing, though finding Saab-specialist mechanics is becoming harder.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, distinctive diesel saloon with good motorway manners and can verify the timing belt and water pump have been replaced recently.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel with manageable issues if properly maintained
The Z19DTH is a proven engine used across multiple brands (Opel, Alfa Romeo, Fiat) with high-mileage examples exceeding 300,000 km documented. Most issues relate to the emission control system (EGR, swirl flaps, DPF) and are worsened by short-trip driving. The critical maintenance item is timing belt and water pump replacement before the factory interval. With regular motorway use, proactive maintenance, and a knowledgeable workshop, the 1.9 TiD can be economical and dependable long-term transport.

All Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Saab no longer exists as a manufacturer, so factory-backed extended warranties are unavailable. Some third-party warranty providers cover Saab vehicles, but exclusions for orphan brands are common. Budget for self-funded repairs.
