Compact plug-in hybrid crossover built on the Fiat Small Wide platform at the Melfi plant in Italy. The 4xe combines a 1.3 GSE T4 turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels with a 60 hp electric motor driving the rear axle, giving permanent electric AWD. Available in 190 hp and 240 hp combined outputs with an Aisin 6-speed torque-converter automatic. The 11.4 kWh battery delivers around 25-35 km of real-world electric range. Production ended in late 2024 as Stellantis discontinued all PHEV models.· more· less

Electric AWD with genuine off-road ability Aisin 6-speed auto more reliable than DDCT
PHEV charging and cooling system issues Limited electric range, rapid degradation
Buy if: You want a compact PHEV with electric AWD, have home charging for daily top-ups, and can verify hybrid system health and all recalls are completed.
Avoid if: You rarely plug in (negates all PHEV benefits), cannot verify HV battery state of health, or want low-maintenance ownership.

Common Problems
PHEV complexity adds risk on top of an already complex base car
The Renegade 4xe layers a plug-in hybrid system onto the already complex GSE T4 MultiAir engine. The Aisin 6-speed automatic is a positive versus the non-PHEV's troublesome DDCT, but PHEV-specific components (IDCM charging module, multiple battery coolant pumps, HV battery, electric motor) introduce failure points not present on conventional Renegades. European recalls for both the IDCM cable torque and battery water ingress must be verified as completed. The Uconnect screen and 12V battery drain affect nearly all examples. Electric range is modest when new and degrades noticeably within a few years. With diligent charging, proper maintenance, and all recalls addressed, the 4xe can serve well for short-trip electric commuting with occasional longer drives.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
IDCM electrical cable connection insufficient torque (Nov 2021 - May 2024 production, recall 74B) Critical - verify completed
HV battery water ingress / production defect causing fire risk (Nov 2022 - Mar 2023 production) Critical - verify completed
Side airbag curtain not connected (Dec 2020 - Jul 2021 production, recall Z93) Verify completed
Brake pedal assembly disengagement risk (2023-2024 production) Verify completed
Seat belt buckle sensor connector fault affecting airbag deployment (2019-2023 production) Verify completed
The IDCM electrical connection recall (74B) and battery water ingress recall are particularly important for the 4xe. Both affect core hybrid system safety. The battery fire recall affecting Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe models uses a different battery pack and does not apply to the Renegade 4xe, but verify with Jeep using the VIN. Contact a Jeep dealer with the VIN to confirm all outstanding recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all pre-2024 models
HV battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) May still be active on 2020+ models with capacity above 70%
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) May still be active on 2020+ models
Extended warranty Available through Jeep/Stellantis dealers
All used Renegade 4xe models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The HV battery warranty (typically 8 years / 160,000 km with 70% capacity guarantee) should still cover 2020-2024 models for battery defects. This is separate from the general vehicle warranty. Extended warranties through Stellantis dealers may exclude PHEV-specific components as wear items. Verify battery warranty status with the VIN.
