This is the most widely reported Tonale PHEV issue. The DC-DC converter (which charges the 12V from the high-voltage battery) does not always engage when the car is off. Multiple electronic modules, including the infotainment system and emergency call module, fail to enter deep sleep mode, draining the 12V battery within days. A TSB (08-158-24) addresses part of this via a Display Screen Module software update, and a BCM update released in late 2024 helps further. However, many owners still report the issue persists after updates. Practical workarounds include keeping a CTEK or NOCO trickle charger connected when parked, storing the key fob in a Faraday pouch away from the vehicle, and upgrading to a higher-capacity AGM battery (Exide EK600 or similar, around €150-200). Most owners spend €200-500 overall including a maintainer and possibly multiple battery replacements before the software fix fully takes effect.

Owners report the 10.25-inch display freezing, going completely black, or getting stuck on the boot logo. Holding the volume knob for several seconds forces a reboot in most cases. TSB 08-370-25 provides a USB update to version U33.43, which targets freeze and display error issues on vehicles built before November 2024. Some owners report that OTA updates have introduced new bugs rather than fixing old ones, and one update was reportedly withdrawn after causing Error -5 failures with no rollback procedure. If the Display Screen Module itself fails rather than just the software, replacement costs €500-800 for the unit plus labor. Under warranty this is covered, but out-of-warranty it becomes a meaningful expense. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are also commonly affected by the same underlying issues.

Some owners report the hybrid system entering a degraded mode where the electric motor is deactivated or limited, accompanied by dashboard warnings. Common diagnostic codes include P0A1F and P0A94 (inverter/converter errors) and P0C7x (battery temperature sensor codes). In some cases, the HV battery coolant pump fails, preventing proper thermal management and triggering limp mode. Early cars can show noticeable capacity reduction from the nominal 15.5 kWh, with electric range dropping from the advertised 60-70 km to under 40 km. The Aisin F21-250 6-speed automatic paired with the PHEV system can exhibit jerky shifts at low speeds, particularly during the transition between electric and combustion power. Shift times reportedly increase from the normal 0.3 seconds to over 1 second in some cases, most noticeable in stop-and-go traffic. This typically manifests between 3,000-5,000 km and can worsen over time if not addressed. Software recalibration at a dealer often improves or resolves the issue. Engine over-revving to 5,000-6,000 rpm before upshifting has also been reported, even when not in manual mode. Persistent valve body or mechatronic faults requiring hardware replacement can cost €800-1,500 outside warranty.

Owners report the adaptive cruise control displaying random speed readings (showing 18 or 80 km/h in zones where neither is correct), disengaging unexpectedly in rain or at night with oncoming headlights, and the emergency braking system triggering false warnings. The front camera module (HALF module) that controls collision avoidance and emergency braking is the primary culprit. Software updates have addressed some of these issues. If the camera or radar module hardware is defective, replacement costs €400-1,200 depending on the component. The auto rain sensor wipers also commonly malfunction, requiring manual workarounds.

A smaller number of owners report problems with AC charging: the car not recognising the cable, charging sessions being interrupted mid-way, or the charge rate dropping well below the rated 7.4 kW. A small number of owners have reported oil leaks from the engine-gearbox junction area. In some cases, the gearbox must be partially removed to access and reseal the affected area, which significantly increases labor costs.
