Alfa Romeo's compact SUV built on a Stellantis platform shared with the Jeep Compass. The 1.6 MultiJet diesel is the only pure combustion option in Europe and pairs exclusively with a 6-speed TCT dual-clutch gearbox. Styling is distinctly Alfa, but underneath this is a mainstream crossover. The diesel variant appeals to higher-mileage drivers seeking fuel economy in the 5-6 l/100 km range.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven diesel engine, but first-generation platform with early teething issues
The 1.6 MultiJet diesel itself is an established FCA/Stellantis engine with a solid track record in the Giulietta and Tipo. However, as a first-generation model launched in 2022, the Tonale has accumulated a notable number of quality concerns around electronics, software stability, and build quality. The TCT gearbox is adequate for motorway cruising but less suited to frequent urban stop-start driving. DPF clogging is preventable with appropriate driving patterns. Most electrical issues are addressable through software updates, and the brake pedal recall is free to resolve.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) May still apply on 2024-2025 models. Expired on 2022-2023 cars.
Rust perforation warranty 8 years from first registration
Extended warranty availability Available through Alfa Romeo dealers (Mopar MaxCare)
Alfa Romeo offers a 2-year factory warranty in Europe. Early 2022-2023 Tonales are now outside factory coverage. Given the known electronic and software issues, extended warranty cover is worth considering for this model.
