2016-2024 · 1.2 DualJet K12C/K12D SHVS mild hybrid (83-90 hp) 4-cylinder petrol

Quirky micro-SUV that topped the What Car? small SUV reliability survey and was named Most Reliable City Car by Which?. The 1.2 SHVS mild hybrid pairs the K12C (pre-2020) or K12D (facelift) DualJet engine with a belt-driven Integrated Starter Generator and a small lithium-ion battery under the front passenger seat. Timing chain, not belt. The AGS automated manual gearbox on pre-2020 cars has a known clutch judder problem that Suzuki replaced with a CVT at the 2020 facelift.

Excellent reliability record Very low running costs
AGS gearbox judders (pre-2020) ISG belt failure on early cars
Buy if: You want a cheap, ultra-light, ultra-reliable small hybrid and can find a manual or post-2020 CVT with full service history.
Avoid if: You are considering a pre-2020 AGS automatic or cannot verify the ISG belt and fuel tank breather recalls have been completed.

Common Problems
One of the most reliable small cars you can buy
The Ignis topped the What Car? small SUV reliability survey and was named Most Reliable City Car by Which?. The K12C and K12D DualJet engines are robust with a maintenance-free timing chain. The main concern is the AGS automated manual gearbox on pre-2020 cars, which has a documented judder issue. The SHVS mild hybrid system is simple and has low failure rates — the ISG belt is the main item to watch and is covered by recall on affected production. Other issues are minor: infotainment glitches, suspension bush noise, and exhaust and spring corrosion in salty climates.

↔ Also consider

Suzuki Ignis 1.2 DualJet 2016-2024 Same car, same K12C/K12D engine family. Mechanically almost identical to the hybrid. Slightly simpler because no ISG belt or 12V Li-ion battery to worry about. Suzuki Swift 1.2 2017-present Same brand, same K12C/K12D engine family, similar AGS and SHVS concerns. Swift is slightly cheaper to run and has wider tire choices than the Ignis's unusual 175/60 R16. Toyota Yaris XP130 1.5 Hybrid 2011-2020 Proven Toyota full-hybrid in the same size class. Legendary reliability and lower fuel use, but noticeably more expensive to buy and more complex hybrid electronics than the Ignis' simple SHVS mild-hybrid system. Suzuki Vitara LY 1.6 2015-2024 Larger Suzuki with a different naturally aspirated engine. Similar Suzuki reliability track record but higher running costs due to size and weight. Suzuki Swift Sport ZC33S 2018-2024 Turbocharged 1.4 Boosterjet. More performance and more complexity. Generally reliable for a warm hatch but running costs are noticeably higher than the Ignis hybrid.
