Compact crossover built at Suzuki's Hungarian factory, combining Suzuki's robust chassis with a Fiat-sourced 1.6 MultiJet diesel. The D16AA engine is the same unit found in the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X, delivering 120 hp and strong low-end torque. Available with a 6-speed manual or TCSS automated clutch, in front-wheel drive or AllGrip 4WD. The diesel was discontinued in 2019 when Suzuki moved to petrol and hybrid powertrains across Europe.· more· less

DPF clogs on short urban trips Fiat-sourced diesel adds complexity
Buy if: You regularly drive 20+ km trips at motorway speeds and want a compact diesel SUV with low fuel costs and reliable Suzuki underpinnings.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips under 15 km (DPF will clog) or prefer the simplicity and lower risk of the petrol Vitara.

Common Problems
Reliable Suzuki chassis, but the Fiat diesel adds typical modern diesel ownership risks
The Suzuki Vitara LY itself is one of the most reliable compact SUVs in European reliability surveys. However, the Fiat-sourced 1.6 MultiJet diesel introduces the standard risks associated with modern small diesels: DPF clogging on short trips, EGR valve carbon buildup, oil pump pickup seal aging, and potential injector wear at higher mileages. Cars with manual gearboxes that have been used predominantly for longer trips will have significantly fewer problems. Avoid TCSS-equipped models unless the clutch history is well documented.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Intercooler outlet pipe insulator detachment, fire risk (diesel models) Critical - verify completed
Brake booster vacuum pump check valve swelling (2015-2022, all engines, recall 97G5) Critical - verify completed
NOx emissions software update, 1.6 DDiS (Feb 2015 - Sep 2016 production) Verify completed
Rear axle bolt coating defect (Oct 2015 - Dec 2015 production) Verify completed
Automatic emergency braking software error (Jan 2015 - May 2015 production) Verify if applicable
Contact a Suzuki dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The intercooler insulator and brake booster recalls are particularly important for diesel models and affect safety directly.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all diesel Vitaras (production ended 2019)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2015-2019 models, check with Suzuki dealer
All Vitara LY 1.6 DDiS models are now outside the original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. Suzuki's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on later examples. Third-party extended warranties are available but verify they cover diesel-specific components (DPF, EGR, turbo, injectors) before purchasing.
