Ferrari's first front-engine V8 hardtop convertible since the 1960s California Spyder. The 4.3-litre F136 is a proven engine family also used in the 458 and Maserati GranTurismo, and it rewards regular use with solid reliability. The retractable hardtop, the Getrag DCT gearbox, and the inevitable sticky interior trim are the three areas that define the ownership experience and budget.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven engine, but roof and gearbox complexity drive costs
The F136 V8 is fundamentally robust and shares its architecture with the well-regarded 458 and Maserati GranTurismo. Many examples exceed 100,000 km without major engine issues. However, the retractable hardtop mechanism and the DCT gearbox are the two areas that generate the largest unexpected repair bills. Pre-2012 cars carry higher DCT risk. The sticky interior trim is essentially unavoidable on all cars of this age, but specialist refinishing services have brought costs down significantly. Regular driving, proper storage with a battery conditioner, and a relationship with a competent independent Ferrari specialist are the keys to manageable ownership.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Crankshaft machining defect (early 2009-2010 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2009-2014, multiple recall campaigns) Critical - verify completed
Brake fluid reservoir cap venting issue (2009-2014 California) Verify completed
Contact Ferrari with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical as it has been expanded in multiple campaigns covering different production years. The brake fluid reservoir cap recall affects all California model years and should be verified regardless of production date.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all used Californias
New Power extended warranty Available through Ferrari dealers, approximately €5,000-6,000/year for V8 models
New Power eligibility Requires 101-point inspection and full Ferrari dealer service history
New Power exclusions Oil leaks (including shock absorbers) are not covered
All California 4.3 V8 models are well outside their original 3-year factory warranty. The New Power extended warranty is available but requires full dealer service history and a pre-enrollment inspection. Important: oil leaks are explicitly excluded, which means magnetorheological shock absorber failures are not covered.

↔ Also consider

Maserati GranTurismo 4.2 V8 M145
Maserati GranTurismo 4.2 V8 M145 2007-2019
Same Ferrari-derived F136 V8 but with a conventional ZF automatic. No roof complexity. Lower purchase price and similar engine reliability, but Maserati-specific electrical issues and variator problems add their own costs.
Porsche 911 Carrera S 997
Porsche 911 Carrera S 997 2004-2012
Significantly lower running costs. 997.1 has IMS bearing risk but 997.2 is very reliable. No roof mechanism worries on the coupe. More affordable to service overall.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Aston Martin V8 Vantage 2005-2017
Comparable GT with a robust Ford-derived V8. Known for timing cover oil leaks and expensive Sportshift clutch replacement, but no retractable roof complexity.
Ferrari 458
Ferrari 458 2010-2015
Shares the F136 engine family in a larger 4.5L form. More powerful and better regarded. DCT labor costs are higher due to mid-engine layout, but the 458 is generally considered more reliable overall.
Mercedes-Benz SL 500 R231
Mercedes-Benz SL 500 R231 2012-2020
Similar retractable hardtop GT concept with a twin-turbo V8. Mercedes has AIRMATIC suspension and electronics complexity, but lower parts costs and broader dealer network.
