The track-focused evolution of the 458, lighter by 90 kg and producing 597 hp from its revised F136 FB V8. Approximately 3,000 coupes were built between 2013 and 2015, all with carbon-ceramic brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires as standard. The Speciale introduced Ferrari's Side Slip Angle Control (SSC), later adopted across the range. Mechanically it shares all the same components as the standard 458, meaning the same known failure modes apply.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable for a supercar, but repair labor costs are high
The 458 Speciale shares the 458 Italia's reputation as one of Ferrari's most reliable modern cars. The F136 V8 is robust with chain-driven timing (no timing belt), and the 2013-2015 production benefits from improvements to gearbox cooling and resolution of early-production issues found on 2010-2011 Italias. However, when things do fail, labor costs are high due to mid-engine packaging. Most gearbox work requires full transaxle removal. The sticky interior is nearly universal on aged cars. Budget for high individual repair bills, but expect fewer of them than with most exotic alternatives.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake fluid reservoir cap ventilation defect causing potential brake fluid leakage (2014-2015 models, RC78/RC80) Critical - verify completed
Driver side airbag module improper assembly (certain 2015 models, RC57) Critical - verify completed
Airbag ECU malfunction causing potential non-deployment (certain 2015 models, RC70) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement, passenger frontal airbag (2013-2015 models) Verify completed
Contact Ferrari with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake fluid reservoir cap recall is particularly important as it affects braking safety. The Speciale was not affected by the 2010 wheel arch fire recall (that applied to early 458 Italias only) or the 2012 crankshaft recall (only certain 2011-2012 cars).
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all 458 Speciales
New Power extended warranty Available through Ferrari dealers, approx. €5,500-6,500/year for V8 models
Extended warranty eligibility Up to 15 years from original sale date, subject to 101-point inspection
Extended warranty exclusions Oil leaks (including shock absorbers), wear items, and cosmetic issues are not covered
All 458 Speciales are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. The New Power extended warranty is available through Ferrari dealers for cars up to 15 years from original sale, subject to passing a 101-point inspection. All service must have been performed at authorized Ferrari dealers to qualify. Important: oil leaks are explicitly excluded, which means magnetorheological shock absorber failures are not covered.

↔ Also consider

Ferrari 458 Italia
Ferrari 458 Italia 2010-2015
Mechanically identical, same issues. Italia is heavier, less powerful, and uses standard brakes. Early 2010-2011 cars have worse DCT issues than the Speciale's 2013-2015 production.
Porsche 911 Carrera 991
Porsche 911 Carrera 991 2011-2019
Significantly lower running costs and better reliability. Engine mount failures and PDK issues are the main concerns, but nothing approaching Ferrari labor rates.
Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4
Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 2011-2022
V12 means higher running costs and more complexity. ISR gearbox is jerky, and engine wiring harness issues affect 2012 models. The 458 Speciale is cheaper to maintain.
McLaren 570S
McLaren 570S 2015-2021
Known for hydraulic suspension issues and windscreen stress fractures. Twin-turbo V8 is reliable but McLaren's dealer network is much smaller than Ferrari's.
Audi R8 4.2 FSI V8 Type 42
Audi R8 4.2 FSI V8 Type 42 2007-2015
More reliable and considerably cheaper to maintain thanks to Audi parts network. Magnetic ride shocks leak on both cars. R-Tronic gearbox is less reliable than the R8's manual option.
