Ferrari's first turbocharged mid-engine V8 road car since the F40. The 488 GTB uses the 3.9-litre F154 engine with twin IHI turbochargers producing 670 hp, and a Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It replaced the naturally aspirated 458 in 2015 and was itself replaced by the F8 Tributo in 2019. The car benefits from improved gearbox cooling over the 458, and Ferrari's 7-year complimentary maintenance programme covers scheduled servicing from new.· more· less

Turbo seal/shaft failures reported High labor costs, mid-engine access
Buy if: You want a modern turbocharged Ferrari with strong performance and can commit to proper storage (battery tender) and a Ferrari specialist for maintenance.
Avoid if: You cannot absorb surprise repair bills in the €5,000-15,000 range or the car will sit unused for weeks without a battery tender.

Common Problems
Reliable for a turbo supercar, but mid-engine labor costs are high
The 488 GTB is generally considered a reliable supercar. The F154 twin-turbo V8 is fundamentally robust, and many examples reach high mileage without major engine issues. Compared to the 458, improved gearbox cooling reduces DCT failure frequency, though the addition of twin turbochargers introduces a new area of potential expense. The sticky interior coating affects virtually all aged examples. When repairs are needed, labor costs are high due to mid-engine packaging. Most gearbox and turbo work requires transaxle or significant component removal. Budget for individual repair bills in the €3,000-15,000 range, but expect them to occur less frequently than the headline numbers suggest.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake fluid reservoir cap seal failure causing potential brake fluid leak (2016-2019 models) Critical - verify completed
Fuel vapor separator cracking and fuel leak / fire risk (2018-2019 models) Critical - verify completed
Low-pressure fuel line coating defect causing vapor leak (early 2016 production) Verify completed
Airbag ECU malfunction causing potential non-deployment (2016-2018 models) Verify completed
Takata passenger airbag inflator degradation risk (2016-2018 models) Verify completed
Brake disc wear warning software error (2016 models only) Verify completed
Contact Ferrari with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake fluid reservoir recall (2022) and fuel vapor separator recall (2019) are particularly critical for safety. Takata airbag replacements should have been completed, but verify regardless. Six separate recalls have affected the 488 GTB production run.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all 488 GTBs
7-year complimentary maintenance Covers scheduled servicing only; expired on 2015-2018 cars
Power15 extended warranty Available through Ferrari dealers, renewable annually up to year 15
Extended warranty exclusions Oil leaks (including shock absorbers), wear items, and cosmetic issues are not covered
All 488 GTBs are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. The 7-year complimentary maintenance programme covers scheduled servicing (oil, filters, brake fluid, inspections) but not repairs. Ferrari's Power15 extended warranty is available through dealers for cars under approximately 90,000 km and up to 15 years old, subject to a comprehensive inspection. Oil leaks are explicitly excluded, so magnetorheological shock absorber failures are not covered. All service must have been performed at authorized Ferrari dealers to qualify.

Ferrari 458 Italia
Ferrari 458 Italia 2010-2015
Naturally aspirated predecessor. No turbo risk but worse DCT cooling. Sticky interior and shock leaks affect both equally.

Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI Type 4S 2015-2024
Extremely reliable V10 engine with lower running costs. Magnetic ride leaks affect both, but Audi parts are considerably cheaper.
Ferrari 458 Speciale Italia
Ferrari 458 Speciale Italia 2013-2015
Shares the 458's DCT and shock issues. Higher-revving NA engine is robust but clutch wears faster with track use.
Ferrari 360 Modena 3.6 V8
Ferrari 360 Modena 3.6 V8 1999-2005
Older generation with F1 hydraulic clutch wear as the main concern. Simpler engine but sticky interior affects it too.
Ferrari LaFerrari
Ferrari LaFerrari 2013-2016
Hybrid V12 hypercar with far higher complexity and running costs. HY-KERS battery pack is a major expense the 488 avoids.
