2010-2015 · 4.5L V8 F136 naturally aspirated (562-597 hp)

The last naturally aspirated V8 mid-engine Ferrari, widely regarded as one of the most reliable modern Ferraris. The F136 FB engine uses timing chains rather than belts, and many examples have exceeded 100,000 km without major powertrain trouble. The main ownership concerns centre on the DCT gearbox electronics (expensive labor due to transaxle removal), magnetorheological shock absorber leaks, the infamous sticky interior coating, and galvanic corrosion on early cars. Post-2012 production addressed several early teething problems.

Buy if: You want a reliable supercar with a naturally aspirated V8 and can budget for high labor costs when repairs are needed.
Avoid if: You cannot afford surprise repair bills in the €5,000-10,000 range or want low-maintenance ownership.

Common Problems
Reliable for a supercar, but repair labor costs are high
The 458 is widely considered Ferrari's most reliable modern car. The F136 V8 is robust with no timing belt (uses chain), and many examples exceed 100,000 km without major powertrain issues. However, when things do fail, labor costs are high due to mid-engine packaging — most gearbox work requires full transaxle removal. The sticky interior is almost universal on aged cars. Post-2012 production cars benefit from several improvements to gearbox cooling and early-production issues. Budget for high individual repair bills, but expect fewer of them than with most exotic alternatives.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Wheel arch liner fire risk — adhesive overheating (2010-2011 production) Critical - verify completed
Crankshaft machining defect — potential engine seizure (certain 2011-2012 models) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator — passenger frontal airbag (2010-2015 models) Verify completed
Airbag ECU malfunction — potential non-deployment (selected production dates) Verify completed
Driver side airbag assembly — improper assembly (certain 2015 models) Verify completed
Contact Ferrari with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fire recall and crankshaft recall are particularly critical for early production cars. Takata airbag replacements should have been completed by now, but verify regardless.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all 458s
New Power / MainPower extended warranty Available through Ferrari dealers, approx. €5,500-6,500/year for V8 models
Extended warranty mileage limit 90,000 km maximum — high-mileage cars are ineligible
Extended warranty exclusions Oil leaks (including shock absorbers), wear items, and cosmetic issues are not covered
All 458s are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. The New Power / MainPower extended warranty is available through Ferrari dealers for cars up to 15 years old and under 90,000 km, subject to passing a 101-point inspection. Important: oil leaks are explicitly excluded, which means magnetorheological shock absorber failures are not covered. All service must have been performed at authorized Ferrari dealers to qualify.

↔ Also consider

Porsche 911 Carrera 991 2011-2019 Significantly lower running costs and better reliability. Engine mount failures and PDK issues are the main concerns, but nothing approaching Ferrari labor rates. Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 2011-2022 V12 means higher running costs and more complexity. ISR gearbox is jerky, and engine wiring harness issues affect 2012 models. The 458 is cheaper to maintain. McLaren 570S 2015-2021 Known for hydraulic suspension issues and windscreen stress fractures. Twin-turbo V8 is reliable but McLaren's dealer network is much smaller than Ferrari's. Audi R8 V10 Type 42 2009-2015 More reliable and considerably cheaper to maintain thanks to Audi parts network. Magnetic ride shocks leak on both cars. R-Tronic gearbox is less reliable than the R8's manual. Ferrari LaFerrari 2013-2016 Hybrid V12 hypercar with far higher running costs and complexity. The 458's naturally aspirated V8 is simpler and more predictable to maintain.
