The only diesel-powered raised estate Subaru ever sold in Europe. The BS-generation Outback pairs the flat-four EE20 boxer diesel with symmetrical all-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or Lineartronic CVT. The Euro 6 version fitted from 2014 resolved the crankshaft failures that plagued earlier Euro 4/5 engines, but the EE20 remains a niche powerplant with a limited specialist network across Europe and well-documented sensitivity to short-trip driving.· more· less

Standard symmetrical AWD system Strong low-end torque for towing
DPF very sensitive to short trips Limited diesel specialist network
Buy if: You regularly drive long distances or motorways, need genuine AWD capability, and can find one with a complete Subaru service history and evidence of regular highway use.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF will clog and oil will dilute), want cheap widely available parts, or cannot easily access a Subaru diesel specialist.

Common Problems
Niche diesel requiring committed maintenance and highway driving
The EE20 boxer diesel in the BS Outback is the improved Euro 6 version, which resolved the crankshaft failures of earlier engines. However, the DPF system is notably sensitive to short trips, and oil dilution from incomplete regeneration is a real concern for urban drivers. EGR fouling, turbo wear, and glow plug failures add to the maintenance burden. Finding a specialist familiar with the EE20 can be challenging outside major cities. With disciplined highway driving and shortened oil change intervals, the engine can reach 200,000+ km, but it demands more attention than mainstream diesel competitors.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Electronic park brake connector disconnection (2015-2018 models) Verify completed
Brake lamp switch failure (2015 models, 436 vehicles) Verify completed
Air intake duct cracking causing rough idle and stalling (2016 models, 255 vehicles) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2014-2015 models) Verify completed
Steering column machining defect (Feb-May 2016 production) Critical - verify completed
Contact Subaru with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The steering column recall is safety-critical and applies to a narrow production window. The electronic park brake recall affects a wider range of 2015-2018 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used Outback BS models
Extended CVT warranty 10 years / 160,000 km on certain models (check with Subaru)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active on 2014-2020 models
All Outback BS diesel models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. The extended CVT warranty (10 years / 160,000 km) was offered on some models and may still cover 2016-2020 cars. Check with a Subaru dealer using the VIN. Subaru's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on later production models.
