The only diesel Subaru ever sold in Europe. The flat-four EE20 boxer diesel is an unusual engine that pairs with Subaru's symmetrical AWD and delivers decent torque for towing and off-road use. Build quality is solid and the cabin is practical, but the EE20 has earned a troubled reputation: DPF clogging from short trips, EGR and intake fouling, turbo wear, and on pre-2015 engines the risk of crankshaft failure. Finding a Subaru diesel specialist can be challenging outside major cities.· more· less

Genuine symmetrical AWD standard Strong torque for towing and hills
DPF very sensitive to short trips Limited diesel specialist network
Buy if: You regularly drive long distances or motorways, need AWD capability, and can find one with a complete Subaru service history and evidence of regular highway use.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF will clog), want low-cost maintenance, or cannot easily access a Subaru specialist for diesel-specific work.

Common Problems
Demanding diesel that requires specific driving habits and attentive maintenance
The EE20 boxer diesel is an unconventional engine with a troubled reputation. It can provide reliable service beyond 200,000 km if driven primarily on motorways, serviced strictly on schedule, and kept above 2,000 RPM regularly. However, short-trip urban use rapidly accelerates DPF, EGR, and oil dilution problems. The 2015+ Euro 6 facelift models are meaningfully better than earlier cars, having resolved the crankshaft risk and improved emissions management. A complete Subaru service history and evidence of regular long-distance driving are essential for any used purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Rear coil spring corrosion (2013-2018 models, recall WUT-05) Verify completed
Brake lamp switch failure (2014-2016 models, recall WUE-90) Verify completed
Turbo oil supply pipe undersized diameter (2018 diesel models, recall SRT268) Verify completed
Clutch pipe wiring loom contact (2013-2014 diesel manual, recall SI0438) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (passenger side, various years) Verify completed
The Forester SJ diesel has several model-specific recalls in addition to the general SJ recalls. The turbo oil pipe recall (SRT268) is critical for 2018 models as undersized pipes can starve the turbo of lubrication. The clutch pipe wiring recall (SI0438) affects 2013-2014 manual diesel models. Contact a Subaru dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all SJ diesel models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014+ models
CVT extended warranty (if applicable) 10 years / 160,000 km on 2014-2018 CVT models
All Forester SJ diesel models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. If equipped with the Lineartronic CVT, the extended CVT warranty (10 years / 160,000 km) may still apply to later models. Verify with a Subaru dealer. There is no extended warranty program for the EE20 diesel engine itself despite its known issues.
