Contributing factors include fuel dilution from injector seal leaks, carbon restricting oil galleries, and coolant contamination from EGR cooler failure. Warning signs are a rhythmic knock from the lower block and metallic debris in oil analysis. A crankshaft regrind costs around €6,000 if caught very early. A full engine rebuild runs €7,000-10,000 at a specialist, while dealer engine replacement can reach €15,000-25,000. Regular oil analysis and strict adherence to oil specifications significantly reduce risk.

The L405's electronic air suspension is one of its most expensive maintenance areas. The AMK compressor has a thermal cutout that triggers more frequently as the unit ages, eventually leading to complete failure (€700-1,400 replacement). Air springs develop leaks where the rubber bag meets the piston, causing the car to sag overnight on one corner (€300-750 per spring). The valve block can develop internal leaks (€500-1,000).
