Importantly, the transmission control module must be informed about the fluid degradation level when changing fluid; using a scan tool to reset this is essential. This causes the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and bind, preventing the parking brake from engaging or disengaging properly. Mitsubishi dealers were instructed to inspect rear brake calipers and replace the parking brake boot, lever, or caliper body as necessary. This recall work was performed free of charge. A second recall in 2020 affected cars built January-May 2016 for peeling rust-proofing within the parking brake assembly. Verify with Mitsubishi using the VIN that all recall work has been completed.
