The ASX is a compact crossover that remained largely unchanged over a 12-year production run. From 2015, European diesel models received the PSA DV6C 1.6-litre engine replacing Mitsubishi's own unit. This 8-valve SOHC diesel is the improved version of PSA's widely used 1.6 HDi, addressing many of the earlier 16-valve variant's sludge and turbo problems. It uses a timing belt (not a chain), requires low-SAPS C2 oil, and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Parts are affordable and widely available from both Mitsubishi and PSA supplier networks.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable diesel if driven regularly at speed, problematic for short trips
The ASX 1.6 DI-D uses the improved DV6C engine, which is significantly more dependable than PSA's earlier 16-valve diesel. With correct low-SAPS oil and regular motorway driving, this is a straightforward ownership proposition. However, short-trip use rapidly clogs the DPF and fouls the EGR, leading to expensive repairs. Tailgate corrosion affects many ASX models regardless of driving pattern. With proper maintenance and suitable driving habits, annual risk costs should stay manageable.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Exhaust tailpipe detachment — weld crack between silencer and tailpipe (2011-2019 models, KBA 14480R) Verify completed
ECU relay overheating — engine may stall and not restart (Dec 2014 - Apr 2016 production) Critical - verify completed
Door latch assembly — may not operate correctly in high temperatures (Apr 2015 - Mar 2016 production) Verify completed
Tailgate gas strut detachment — end cap can come off due to corrosion (2010-2014 models) Verify completed
Wiper linkage corrosion — water ingress causes ball joint to corrode and wipers to seize (May 2013 - Jan 2016) Verify completed
Contact a Mitsubishi dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ECU relay recall is particularly important for 2015-2016 models as it can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used ASX 1.6 DI-D models
Perforation rust warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2015+ models — check with dealer
Extended warranty Available through Mitsubishi dealers, varies by market
All ASX 1.6 DI-D models (2015-2019) are now outside their 5-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. The 12-year perforation rust warranty may still be relevant for tailgate corrosion on 2015+ models — check eligibility with a Mitsubishi dealer using the VIN.
