Italian city car with a well-proven Fiat Group diesel engine. The Ypsilon Mk3 (Type 846) was produced for over a decade, sold primarily in Italy, and shares most of its mechanicals with the Fiat Punto and Fiat 500. The 1.3 MultiJet is one of the most widely produced small diesel engines in Europe, with millions of units across Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel, and Suzuki models.· more· less

Proven engine, huge parts supply Very low fuel consumption
Timing chain needs monitoring DPF clogs on short-trip use
Buy if: You need a frugal diesel city car, mostly drive mixed or longer routes, and can find one with documented service history.
Avoid if: You only do short urban trips (DPF clogging is almost guaranteed) or need a car outside Italy where dealer support is limited.

Common Problems
Proven engine, but sensitive to driving patterns and maintenance quality
The 1.3 MultiJet is one of Europe's most produced small diesel engines, and fundamentally robust. However, it is very sensitive to driving patterns. Short-trip urban use causes DPF clogging, oil dilution, EGR carbon buildup, and accelerated timing chain wear, all feeding into each other. Cars driven on mixed or longer routes with strict oil change schedules can reach 200,000 km without major problems. The Ypsilon-specific electric power steering issue is worth checking during any pre-purchase inspection.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
NOx emissions software calibration (models built July 2015 - July 2018, 23,943 vehicles affected) Verify completed
Seatbelt tensioner crimping defect (2016 production) Verify completed
ISOFIX rear right mounting weld defect (November 2014 production) Verify completed
Steering gear rod locking nut insufficiently tightened (March 2022 production, 174 vehicles) Verify completed
Wheel bolts not correctly tightened (2017-2018 production) Verify completed
Front-right driveshaft defect (2018 production) Verify completed
Contact a Fiat/Lancia dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The NOx emissions recall affects a large number of 2015-2018 models and should be confirmed on any car from that production period.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Ypsilon Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty 8 years from first registration
Extended warranty availability Limited options through Fiat/Stellantis dealers in Italy
All Ypsilon Mk3 models with the 1.3 MultiJet are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Lancia dealer coverage is limited outside Italy. Fiat-trained specialists familiar with this engine are widely available across Europe.

Lancia Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir Mk3
Lancia Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir Mk3 2011-2024
Petrol alternative. TwinAir has its own issues: MultiAir module failure and turbo wastegate wear. Avoids DPF concerns entirely.
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1 2007-2020
Same engine in a smaller body. Identical reliability profile. DPF clogging and oil dilution risks are the same.
Fiat 500L 1.3 MultiJet Mk1
Fiat 500L 1.3 MultiJet Mk1 2012-2022
Same engine, larger car. Timing chain tensioner and turbo wastegate issues carry over. 500L is heavier, so engine works harder.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.6 JTDM 940
Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.6 JTDM 940 2010-2020
Larger Fiat Group diesel, different engine. EGR cooler cracking and tailgate wiring issues are its main weak points.
Mini One D F56
Mini One D F56 2014-2021
Premium small diesel alternative. B37 engine is reliable but fuel pressure sensor leak into wiring loom is a known risk.
