The second-generation Continental GT refined the formula that made the original a hit: a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12, all-wheel drive, and a handcrafted interior. Power rose from 567 hp at launch to 635 hp in the GT Speed. Early cars used a 6-speed ZF automatic; from 2013 onwards an 8-speed unit improved both refinement and efficiency. Production quality is high and the W12 itself is durable when properly maintained, though its dense packaging means that even routine jobs can escalate into engine-out events.· more· less

Durable W12 when properly serviced Handcrafted interior built to last
Engine-out labor for many repairs Complex electrics prone to age faults
Buy if: You want a powerful, handcrafted grand tourer and can commit to Bentley-level servicing costs, ideally choosing a 2013+ model with the 8-speed gearbox.
Avoid if: You expect affordable repairs when things go wrong, or plan to use a non-specialist garage without VW Group diagnostic equipment.

Common Problems
Reliable powertrain, but engine accessibility drives up repair costs
The W12 engine itself has a solid reputation for durability, with many examples exceeding 150,000 km without major internal issues. The twin turbochargers are generally robust when maintained with correct 0W-40 synthetic oil. The real ownership challenge is labor costs: the W12 is so tightly packaged that many jobs (vacuum hoses, coolant pipes, turbo actuators) require removing the engine and gearbox as a unit, at 40-50 hours of workshop time. Air suspension degradation is the most predictable significant cost. Electrical issues from water ingress, battery drain, and wiring harness chafing are common on older examples. Post-2013 cars with the 8-speed gearbox are generally recommended over the earlier 6-speed models. Complete service history from a Bentley dealer or recognized specialist is the single most important factor when buying.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Electrical short circuit risk with potential fire hazard (October 2015, 3,642 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
Power steering failure hazard (January 2019, 548 vehicles) Verify completed
Hazard warning lights and demister failures (July 2019, 830 vehicles) Verify completed
Wiring loom trapping/chafing causing electrical short circuits (July 2019, 802 vehicles) Verify completed
Battery cable fire risk near firewall (2012-2014 models) Verify completed
Contact Bentley Motors with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2015 electrical short circuit recall and 2012-2014 battery cable recall are safety-critical items that must be confirmed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all Mk2 models
Extended warranty availability Available through Bentley dealers on select models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
All Mk2 Continental GTs are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options may be available through Bentley dealers but typically exclude wear items, oil leaks, and electrical faults from water ingress. Given the high cost of W12 repairs, an extended warranty from a reputable provider is worth investigating.

↔ Also consider

Bentley Continental GT W12 Mk3
Bentley Continental GT W12 Mk3 2018-2024
Newer MSB platform with better engine access and the ZF 8-speed as standard. Similar W12 issues but adds rotating display failures. Running costs are comparable.
Mercedes-Benz S500 W222
Mercedes-Benz S500 W222 2013-2020
Similar luxury electronics complexity. AIRMATIC suspension also fails but parts and labor are considerably cheaper. Lower overall running costs.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Aston Martin V8 Vantage 2005-2017
Similar labor costs for repairs. Engine is more accessible than the W12 but older Astons have their own electrical gremlins and a known clutch thrust-bearing issue.
Porsche Panamera 4S (971)
Porsche Panamera 4S (971) 2016-2023
Much lower maintenance costs and better engine accessibility. Air suspension issues also occur but Porsche parts are more affordable.
Maserati Quattroporte V 4.2
Maserati Quattroporte V 4.2 2004-2012
Cheaper to buy but less reliable overall. F1 gearbox actuator failures are common and repair costs are high relative to the car's value.
