The first-generation Continental GT reinvented Bentley as a modern grand tourer in 2003. Its VW Group-derived 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 and all-wheel-drive platform proved mechanically solid, and high-mileage examples exist. The Speed (602 hp) arrived in 2007 and the Supersports (630 hp) in 2009. Depreciation has made these accessible, but running costs remain firmly in the luxury segment due to extreme labor requirements when anything needs attention.· more· less

Common Problems
Durable powertrain, but extreme labor costs and a known design flaw
The W12 engine itself is proven and can reach high mileages with proper care. The ZF six-speed automatic is robust. However, the ECU water damage issue is a genuine design weakness that requires preventive maintenance, and the extremely tight engine packaging means even routine tasks like coil pack changes require significant disassembly. Air suspension, vacuum hose deterioration, and general electrical aging are the other main ownership concerns. A well-maintained car from a knowledgeable specialist is far less risky than a poorly serviced example, regardless of mileage.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filter corrosion from road salt exposure - fire risk (2004-2008 models) Verify completed
Carbon ceramic brake rotor securing screws corrosion (2007-2011, carbon ceramic equipped only) Verify if applicable
Fuel tank potential leak (2004-2011 coupes) Verify completed
Contact Bentley with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel filter corrosion recall is particularly important for cars in salt-road climates. The carbon ceramic brake recall only applies to cars with the optional ceramic brakes.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all Mk1 Continental GTs
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk1 models
Extended warranty availability Limited options through specialist insurers
All Mk1 Continental GTs are well outside their original 3-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty options exist through specialist classic and luxury car warranty providers, but coverage is often limited and exclusions are common. Given the potential repair costs, budgeting a dedicated repair fund is generally more practical than extended warranty for cars of this age.
