2019-present · 44.5 kWh (Mk1) / 51-72.6 kWh (Mk2) front-wheel drive electric

One of the most affordable electric SUVs in Europe, backed by SAIC's 7-year warranty. The Mk1 (2019-2021) has a 44.5 kWh NMC battery with 263 km WLTP range, while the Mk2 facelift (2022+) upgraded to LFP chemistry with 51 or 72.6 kWh options and faster charging. Both generations share the same core issues: software glitches, 12V battery management, and a still-developing European dealer network.

7-year / 150,000 km warranty Very low purchase and energy costs
Frequent software and electrical glitches Thin dealer network in Europe
Buy if: You want a cheap electric SUV with a long warranty and can tolerate occasional software quirks and slow dealer response times.
Avoid if: You need polished infotainment, reliable ADAS systems, or fast dealer support for warranty repairs.

Common Problems
Low running costs but frequent software and electrical niggles
The MG ZS EV scored 81.8% in the 2024 What Car? reliability survey, placing 24th out of 27 electric SUVs. Most issues are software-related rather than mechanical: infotainment freezes, 12V battery management, and ADAS false triggers. The Mk2 (2022+) resolved many Mk1 problems through better battery management and self-learning TPMS. The 7-year/150,000 km warranty provides strong coverage, but MG's European dealer network remains thin and wait times for repairs can stretch to three weeks. Cars with all software updates applied are noticeably more reliable than those without.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Driver's door wiring loom (early 2019-2020 Mk1) - loom routing caused premature wire damage. Re-routing and replacement. Verify completed
Charging flap breather replacement - improved locking mechanism prevents water ingress into the charging port area. Verify completed
Infotainment software update - addresses screen freezing, black screen, and camera failures via USB update at dealer. Verify applied
Use the MG Recall Checker at mgrecallchecker.co.uk or contact an MG dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. Early Mk1 cars (2019-2020) had the most recall activity. Ask the dealer to check for any open service campaigns, as not all updates appear in the official recall database.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Transferable to subsequent owners
Years 1-3 Standard coverage, no special conditions
Years 4-7 Requires complete MG dealer service history
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km, 70% capacity guarantee
Rust perforation warranty 6 years
MG's 7-year warranty is among the longest in Europe and transfers to subsequent owners. However, coverage for years 4-7 requires an unbroken MG dealer service history with genuine parts and fluids. Verify this with the VIN before purchase. The HV battery has a separate 8-year / 160,000 km warranty with a 70% minimum capacity guarantee. Important: MG has disputed some water-damage claims, so inspect the battery case underside carefully.
