MG ZS 1.5 VTi Mk1

Multiple owners have reported clutch failure on the 1.5 VTi manual at very low mileage, sometimes under 20,000 km. Symptoms include clutch juddering when pulling away, a slipping sensation under load, and eventual loss of drive. MG dealers have sometimes attributed this to driving style, which has frustrated owners. Early cars (2017-2019) are most affected. If the update has not been applied, the car may also exhibit flat spots during acceleration. A faulty water temperature sensor can cause similar symptoms and costs around €100-200 to replace. Always verify whether the latest ECU update has been applied before purchase.

Owners report scraping or knocking noises from the front end when driving over bumps, along with uneven tyre wear. The issue typically appears between 30,000-60,000 km. Replacement involves new bushes, drop links, and potentially dampers. Cost at an independent garage is €200-350 for bushes and drop links, rising to €500 if dampers also need attention. This is a relatively straightforward and affordable repair but needs addressing promptly to prevent uneven tyre wear.

The infotainment system can freeze, reboot mid-journey, or display unresponsive touch controls. Random dashboard warning lights appear without a corresponding mechanical fault. These electrical issues are among the most commonly reported complaints on the ZS. Most can be resolved with a software update at an MG dealer (free under warranty). In persistent cases, the infotainment unit or a control module may need replacement (€300-600). Wiring faults can also cause flickering lights or intermittent power loss to certain systems. Regular software updates at the dealer reduce the frequency of these glitches.

A steady trickle of owners report persistent TPMS warning lights even when tyre pressures are correct. The issue is usually a faulty sensor inside the wheel, which costs €30-50 for the part. However, coding the new sensor to the car adds dealer labour (around €100-150). In some cases, only the metal valve stem needs replacing (€10-20), which does not require reprogramming.
