Lotus Emira 2.0 Turbo Mk1

A widespread issue affecting Emiras across all production years. The doors and rear quarter panels are made from a compressed fiberglass composite (TCA Ultra) by Teijin, not by Lotus. Paint adhesion on this material fails over time, causing bubbling that typically appears 12-18 months after production, regardless of color or storage conditions. Lotus has been replacing doors under the 3-year paint warranty, but replacement doors have sometimes developed the same blistering again. Some dealers now sand, treat, and repaint rather than replace. Out of warranty, a professional respray per panel costs approximately €750-1,000. This is the most commonly reported Emira issue across owner forums.

The HVAC box, fuse box, and wire harness in the front compartment are not properly sealed against water ingress. Water corrodes the wiring loom junction box at three terminals controlling all cooling functions, including air conditioning. Lotus has issued a service campaign (not officially called a recall) involving installation of a water diverter panel and replacement of the HVAC shield and climate control module. The fix takes approximately 8 hours over 2 days. If only the shield is replaced without the water diverter panel, the problem recurs. Covered under warranty, but out-of-warranty repairs can be expensive due to labor intensity. Some owners have had the complete wiring loom, fuse box, and HVAC unit replaced.

The AMG 8G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox suffers from software issues in some cars. In Auto mode, the transmission can get stuck in 2nd gear and refuse to upshift, causing the engine to over-rev. This tends to occur in Sport mode after hard driving and before the transmission reaches full operating temperature. Lotus released a DCT software update in August 2024 that improved shift speed and addressed the stuck-gear implementation. Later-production 2025/2026 cars have the updated software from the factory. For earlier cars, verify the update has been applied. The software update itself is typically free or low-cost at a Lotus dealer, but some owners have reported delays in availability.

Reports from M139 owners, particularly from Chinese market experience, indicate faulty exhaust valve mechanisms, especially in early production batches. The mid-engine layout traps heat around the exhaust compartment without adequate ventilation, causing the valve actuator to overheat. Symptoms include a check engine light (CEL) with exhaust valve and OPF-related fault codes. Some cars have required complete exhaust replacement. Later production batches show a lower failure rate. Aftermarket exhausts can make this worse if the heat management system is not properly integrated. Most cases have been handled under warranty.

Widely reported across all Emira variants. The infotainment system occasionally freezes completely, with the Home button not responding and AC controls shifting position. The screen may black out for 1-2 minutes before rebooting. Steering wheel swipe controls are overly sensitive, and the clock sometimes displays incorrect times. Some owners report that Google Maps navigation causes the system to lock up within minutes. These issues have persisted through multiple software updates. The only reliable fix for a frozen system is disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery. While not a safety concern and typically not costly to address, it is a persistent quality-of-life issue.

The right rear indicator fault message appears on the dashboard when the engine reaches full operating temperature (88-90 degrees). Heat soak from the engine causes thermal stress on the indicator LED module. The indicator itself typically still functions. In some cases, the light module fails entirely due to prolonged heat exposure. A replacement light module costs approximately €350-400 used or over €1,000 new. A warranty fix is available to replace the rear indicator wiring loom. On I4 models, this issue is particularly noted due to the higher heat output from the turbo engine.

A common early-ownership complaint. The front suspension develops a creaking or scraping noise, especially over uneven surfaces. Lotus has issued an advisory to fit rubber isolators (cups) to the front suspension spring seats, which eliminates the noise. Additional fixes include greasing the front anti-roll bar bushes. This is a minor issue that is inexpensive to resolve and is typically covered under warranty. Not a structural concern.
