The IS 200t marked a significant shift for Lexus: their first turbocharged engine in decades, the 8AR-FTS, replaced the naturally aspirated IS 250 in 2015. It produces 245 hp through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Sold in Europe until 2020, it was rebadged as IS 300 from the 2018 model year in some markets. The dual-injection system (port plus direct) helps mitigate carbon buildup, but the turbo system introduced new failure points unfamiliar to traditional Lexus reliability.· more· less

Common Problems
More reliable than German rivals, but turbo system adds unfamiliar risks for a Lexus
The IS 200t introduced Toyota's first modern turbocharged engine, and while the 8AR-FTS is not as trouble-free as Lexus's proven naturally aspirated and hybrid drivetrains, it remains more reliable overall than its German competitors. The most common issue (VRV valve) is cheap to fix, water pump failures are manageable, and the early turbo problems were largely addressed after 2016. With regular maintenance and attention to the cooling system, the IS 200t can comfortably exceed 200,000 km. The IS 300h hybrid remains the lower-risk option within the same body.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Denso low-pressure fuel pump impeller (primarily 2017 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2015-2017 models, if applicable) Verify completed
Contact Lexus with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Denso fuel pump recall is particularly important for 2017 models, as pump failure can cause engine stalling while driving.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years) Expired on all IS 200t models
Extended warranty (Lexus Relax) Available through Lexus dealers, extendable to 10 years with annual dealer service
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be valid on 2015-2017 models; check with Lexus
All IS 200t models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Lexus offers an extended warranty programme (Lexus Relax) that can be maintained up to 10 years with annual dealer servicing. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to later production cars.
