DS 7 1.5 BlueHDi Mk1

The DV5 1.5 BlueHDi engine produced between October 2017 and January 2023 was fitted with a 7mm camshaft chain prone to premature wear from oil carbonisation and contact stress. When the chain stretches beyond tolerance, it can skip or snap entirely, causing piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine failure. Common warning signs include a rattle on cold start lasting several seconds. Stellantis has extended the warranty to 10 years / 150,000 km (originally 5y/93k miles in 2023, extended to 7y in Jan 2025, then 10y/240,000 km in June 2025) covering 100% of parts and labour, provided the car has been serviced to manufacturer recommendations. The preventive upgrade to the stronger 8mm chain system (including new camshafts and carrier) costs approximately €800-1,500 at an independent specialist. If the chain has already caused engine damage, repair costs range from €3,000-5,000 for a rebuilt engine. Always verify recall status and chain type before purchase.

The SCR system relies on an AdBlue injector and integrated pump that are prone to crystallisation and blockage. White crystals build up inside the injector first, then appear externally. The pump is housed inside the AdBlue tank and can fail outright. Symptoms include dashboard error messages about exhaust emissions, reduced performance, and in some cases a countdown warning limiting starts. Typical onset is between 80,000-120,000 km. A urea injector replacement costs €200-400, while a complete AdBlue tank and pump assembly runs €900-1,200 including labour. Use only certified AdBlue fluid and keep the tank above minimum level to reduce crystallisation risk.

The 1.5 BlueHDi DPF is compact and needs to regenerate relatively frequently. When the car is driven mainly on short trips without reaching sustained motorway speed, the automatic regeneration cycle cannot complete, and soot accumulates until the filter is fully blocked. Symptoms include a DPF warning light, reduced engine power, and rough running. A forced regeneration costs €100-200, professional DPF cleaning €200-300, and a full DPF replacement €900-1,500. Weekly motorway drives of 20-30 minutes at steady speed help prevent this. Using low-ash ACEA C2 engine oil is also important.

The 8-speed Aisin EAT8 fitted to most DS 7s can develop harsh shifts (particularly 1-2) and hesitation pulling away. Problems typically emerge between 40,000-60,000 km and are often caused by degraded transmission fluid or outdated software. Despite Stellantis describing the fluid as lifetime fill, specialists recommend changing the ATF every 60,000 km using the specified ultra-low viscosity AW-2 fluid. A transmission fluid change costs €300-600 at a specialist. Software updates (free at dealer) resolve many cases. If the issue progresses to valve body wear, repair costs €800-1,500; full mechatronics replacement runs €1,500-2,500.

The 12-inch central touchscreen and digital cockpit on the DS 7 are known to freeze, go blank, or spontaneously reboot. Bluetooth disconnections and sat-nav drop-outs are also commonly reported. Causes range from flash memory degradation in the head unit to outdated software. A firmware update at a DS dealer (€60-150 for the diagnostic session) resolves many cases. If the hardware module itself has failed, replacement costs €400-800. Holding the power button for 10 seconds can force a system restart as a temporary workaround.

The DV5 uses high-pressure Bosch common-rail injectors that can fail due to contaminated fuel, sediment buildup, or occasional manufacturing defects.
