The Formentor VZ5 is the limited-edition flagship of the Cupra range, one of only 7,000 units produced between 2021 and 2024. It borrows the iconic 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine from the Audi RS3 and TT RS, paired with the DQ500 wet-clutch DSG and Haldex-based 4Drive AWD. Akebono 6-piston front brakes and 20-inch wheels complete the performance package. The powertrain is well proven in Audi applications, though the Formentor platform adds its own electrical and suspension concerns.· more· less

Buy if: You want a rare performance crossover with the RS3's five-cylinder engine and can budget for premium consumables and specialist servicing.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (carbon buildup, Haldex neglect) or want low-maintenance performance ownership.

Common Problems
Robust powertrain from Audi RS3, but demanding on maintenance
The 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder is a well-proven performance engine that can reach high mileages when properly maintained. The DQ500 gearbox handles the torque well, and the Akebono brakes are well-suited to the car's performance. However, the VZ5 requires more attentive ownership than a standard Formentor: Haldex oil and strainer cleaning every 30,000 km, DSG fluid changes every 40,000 km, and carbon cleaning around 60,000-80,000 km are all essential. The DCC suspension clunking and MIB3 infotainment issues are inherited from the broader Formentor platform. Being a limited-production model (7,000 units), specialist knowledge and some parts availability may require patience.

Faulty fuse / arc flash fire risk (2020-2022 models) Critical - verify completed
Brake fluid heat shield assembly (manufacturing defect, fire risk) Critical - verify completed
Radiator mounting bracket (2021-2022, coolant leak / overheating risk) Verify completed

Seat belt anchorage points inadequate (2020-2021 models) Verify completed
Engine mount heat treatment defect (2023 models) Verify completed
Airbag sensor incompatibility with control unit Verify completed
The Cupra Formentor has an unusually high number of safety recalls. Three of these involve fire risks. Use the VIN at cupraofficial.com/owners/car-recall-checker to verify every recall has been completed before purchase. Given the VZ5 was produced from late 2021, most recalls apply.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all VZ5 models (2021-2024 production)
Rust perforation warranty 12 years from first registration
Extended warranty (Cupra Care) Available through Cupra dealers, varies by market
All Cupra Formentor VZ5 models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty packages are available through Cupra Care but vary by country. Given the limited production of 7,000 units, ensure any extended warranty explicitly covers the 2.5 TSI engine and DQ500 gearbox. Check whether the warranty is transferable to a second owner.
