If the 12V battery has been deeply discharged multiple times, it typically needs replacing (€150-250 for the battery plus labour). Many owners report needing to keep the car on a trickle charger if parked for more than a week. Verify that both software updates have been applied before purchase.

Onboard charger (OBC) failure

A small number of MX-30 owners report complete failure of the onboard charger, which handles AC charging and also supports the 12V battery charging circuit. Symptoms include inability to AC charge, significantly reduced DC fast charging speeds, and sometimes a 12V battery that will not stay charged. One owner reported a dealer quote of over €5,000 for OBC replacement, though after negotiating a goodwill arrangement through the importer, the cost was reduced to €1,500. This is the most expensive potential repair on the MX-30 but remains relatively rare. If the car is still within the 8-year EV component warranty, this should be covered. DC fast charging incompatibility

The MX-30's onboard charger communication protocol was incompatible with certain fast charger brands, causing failed sessions, handshake errors, or very slow charging speeds. Mazda issued Technical Service Bulletin RO23/23 in April 2022, instructing dealers to reprogram the OBC with updated software. Cars built before mid-2022 may not have received this update. Additionally, air in the cooling system can cause the battery management system to believe the pack is overheating, triggering the cooling fan at full power and terminating the charging session after a few minutes. Ask the seller whether the TSB has been applied and test DC fast charging during the inspection.

Freestyle door rattle and misalignment

The MX-30's unique freestyle (coach) rear doors are a recurring source of rattles, with multiple long-running threads on the MX-30 forum. The noise typically comes from a misaligned door lockbox relative to its bracket, loose wiring harness clips inside the door panels, or window glass vibrating against the seal. Front doors can also develop rattles from the A-pillar area. Mazda acknowledged the issue and the fix involves realigning door hinges and fitting additional padding behind the existing rubber seals at the top corner on the opening side. Some owners have applied small pieces of Velcro to the window glass edge as a temporary fix. Earlier production cars (2020-2021) appear more affected.

Cold weather battery heating deficiency

Infotainment system freezing and reboots

The Connectivity Master Unit (CMU) can get stuck in a continuous reboot loop where the Mazda logo appears, the system attempts to load, then shuts down and restarts. This can be caused by corrupted software, a failing navigation SD card, or an internal hardware fault. Bluetooth connectivity drops and audio loss are also reported. Mazda released multiple firmware updates to address stability. A factory reset can be performed by pressing and holding the Volume/Mute, Nav, and Back/Music buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. In persistent cases, the CMU may need replacement (approximately €200-300 for the unit plus labour). Checking the current firmware version and asking whether updates have been applied is recommended.

Reliable drivetrain, but several EV-specific software weak points

The MX-30's electric motor and battery pack have proven generally reliable, with no widespread reports of motor failures or significant battery degradation. The main concerns are concentrated in the 12V auxiliary system (drain issues addressed by multiple software campaigns), occasional OBC hardware failures (rare but expensive), and typical early-EV software teething problems. The freestyle doors add a unique rattle risk not found on conventional cars. As a discontinued model with relatively modest European sales volumes, long-term parts sourcing is worth monitoring, though Mazda is obligated to supply parts for many years and the 8-year EV component warranty provides meaningful coverage.
