Compact diesel MPV with sliding rear doors and seating for six on a footprint smaller than most competitors. The 1.6 MZ-CD is a rebadged PSA DV6C turbodiesel shared with the Peugeot 308, Citroen C4, and Ford Focus TDCi, which means parts are widely available and any diesel specialist will know the engine. Real-world fuel consumption of 5.5-6.5 L/100 km keeps running costs reasonable for families covering longer distances.· more· less

DPF needs regular highway driving Mazda's weaker corrosion protection
Buy if: You drive regular motorway distances, need sliding-door MPV versatility, and can find one with complete service history and no cold-start turbo whine.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips under 15 km, or live in a heavy salt-road climate without budgeting for underbody protection.

Common Problems
Reliable enough with proper driving patterns, but demands discipline
The 1.6 MZ-CD uses the improved PSA DV6C engine, which is more robust than the earlier DV6 TED4 variant. When maintained correctly with ACEA C2 oil, short service intervals, and regular motorway driving to keep the DPF and EGR clean, it can exceed 200,000 km without major drivetrain issues. However, neglected maintenance or predominantly urban use creates a cascade of expensive problems: clogged DPF, oil dilution, sludged turbo feed pipes, and carbon-fouled EGR. Mazda-specific concerns add sliding door mechanism wear and the brand's historically weaker corrosion protection. Check underbody condition carefully on any example from salt-road regions.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (potentially applicable to 2010-2015 models) Verify with VIN
Fuel pump connector corrosion (2009-2010 models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The Mazda 5 was produced in relatively small numbers compared to mainstream Mazda models, so recall communication may not have reached all owners.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all Mazda 5 CW models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models
All Mazda 5 CW models are now well outside their original 3-year factory warranty and 6-year rust perforation warranty. No extended warranty programs are available from Mazda for this model. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-wear diesel components like the DPF and turbocharger.

Petrol version avoids all diesel-specific issues. Chain-driven MZR engine is simpler and cheaper to maintain. Same sliding door and corrosion concerns.
Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi Mk1
Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi Mk1 2009-2017
Same DV6C engine with identical DPF and turbo issues. PSA electrics add complexity. Offers 7 seats versus the Mazda's 6.
Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi Mk3
Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi Mk3 2009-2016
Direct MPV competitor. K9K diesel has its own turbo and injector issues. Scenic has more electrical gremlins but no sliding door concerns.
Mazda 5 2.0 CD CR
Mazda 5 2.0 CD CR 2005-2010
Previous generation with a different diesel engine. The 2.0 RF7J has a serious injector seal design flaw and significantly worse corrosion.
Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCi Mk1
Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCi Mk1 2006-2015
Larger 7-seat MPV with a PSA-derived 2.0 diesel. Better dynamics but heavier, accelerating DMF and clutch wear. Avoid the PowerShift automatic.
