This is the most commonly reported issue on the Yaris/Mazda 2 Hybrid platform. The 35Ah AGM auxiliary battery is compact and located under the rear passenger seat. It powers all 12V systems when the hybrid system is off, and its capacity is limited relative to the car's parasitic electrical draw. In the What Car? reliability survey for the identical Toyota Yaris XP210, 20% of owners reported faults, with 15% specifically citing battery problems. Owners who park for more than a few days, or who primarily drive very short trips (under 5 km), frequently find the car unable to enter READY mode. A replacement AGM battery costs around €150-250, and a quality trickle charger (€40-80, CTEK recommended) is a practical long-term solution. The issue is not a defect but a consequence of the hybrid design where the DC-DC converter only charges the 12V battery when the car is in READY mode.

Because the hybrid system recovers energy through regenerative braking, the conventional friction brakes are used much less than on a non-hybrid car. This leads to surface corrosion on the brake discs, particularly the rears, which may see very little friction contact in normal driving. In humid climates or after periods of standing, corrosion can become significant enough to cause judder, noise, or premature disc replacement. Some owners of the identical Toyota Yaris Hybrid have reported needing disc replacement within the first 30,000-40,000 km due to corrosion rather than wear. The M15A-FXE engine's EGR cooler heat exchanger can develop internal corrosion and cracking from thermal cycling. When this happens, coolant seeps into the EGR channels and then into the cylinders. Symptoms include unexplained coolant loss without visible external leaks, white exhaust smoke, and rough running. Toyota has issued TSB EG-00691T-TME acknowledging the problem but has attributed the issue to fuel quality in some markets rather than accepting it as a manufacturing defect, meaning warranty coverage varies. Repair involves replacing the EGR cooler assembly, costing around €400-900 at independent specialists and up to €1,500 at a dealer. Given the young age of the platform, this issue is still rare but worth monitoring through regular coolant level checks.

The Mazda 2 Hybrid has a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) that requires periodic high-temperature regeneration. If the car is driven predominantly on very short urban trips under 10 km, the filter cannot reach regeneration temperature and gradually clogs. Symptoms include reduced power, warning lights, and increased fuel consumption. A professional chemical cleaning costs €300-500. If the filter is severely blocked and cannot be cleaned, replacement can cost €800-1,200. Regular longer drives of 20 minutes or more at higher speeds prevent the issue entirely. This is a usage-pattern problem rather than a design defect.
