The 12V battery is small for the vehicle's electrical demands when the hybrid system is off. Do not assume every early car left the factory with an AGM battery: documented early UK cars were fitted with a 35 Ah flooded lead-acid unit, so check what type is actually installed on the individual car before ordering a replacement. Owners who park for several days, do mainly short trips, or leave doors open with the key nearby frequently find the car unable to start, as keyless entry senses the key and enables electrical systems. Where the cooler is damaged internally, coolant can seep into the intake tract or cylinders. Symptoms include unexplained coolant loss without visible external leaks, white exhaust smoke, and eventually rough running. Cases have been reported on Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross models sharing the same engine family, but the fault remains uncommon on the LBX given its young age. Replacing the EGR cooler assembly costs €400-900. Using Toyota-specified Super Long Life Coolant and monitoring coolant levels regularly helps detect the issue early.
Very low risk, but limited long-term data
The LBX uses the M15A-FXE engine family that has built an excellent reliability record in the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross since 2020. It is not the same hybrid system, though: the transaxle, power control unit and bipolar NiMH battery were redesigned for the LBX, so the Yaris Cross record supports the engine rather than proving an identical car. The M15A-FXE three-cylinder and planetary eCVT have no timing belt, no friction clutches, and no turbocharger to fail. The main ownership concern is the well-documented 12V battery drain on cars left unused for extended periods, easily solved with a trickle charger. Being a new model launched in late 2023, long-term data beyond 50,000 km is still limited, but the underlying architecture and engine family are proven across millions of Toyota vehicles.
