Lexus's only diesel model came in two distinct European variants that this report covers together. The IS 220d (177 hp) uses the 2AD-FHV engine with the D-CAT exhaust system and its DPNR catalyst, and was available from August 2005 to July 2012. The lower-output IS 200d (150 hp) arrived with the 2010 facelift and was built from July 2010 to July 2012; it uses the 2AD-FTV engine with a conventional diesel particulate filter rather than DPNR, and in the UK it replaced the 220d rather than being sold alongside it. Both are rear-wheel-drive compact executives with a 6-speed manual gearbox, offering a distinctive rear-driven alternative to the predominantly front- and all-wheel-drive German competitors. Build quality and interior fit are typical Lexus, and the chassis delivers a rewarding balance of comfort and engagement.· more· less

Excellent build and interior quality Rewarding rear-wheel-drive chassis
Problematic 2AD diesel engine 220d D-CAT/DPNR system complex and costly
Buy if: You do mostly motorway driving, can check the cylinder head and head gasket history through invoices, and want a well-built rear-drive alternative to the German compact executives.
Avoid if: Your driving is predominantly urban or short-trip, or you cannot tolerate the risk of expensive engine and emission system repairs.

Common Problems
Engine and emission system issues overshadow otherwise solid Lexus quality
The 2AD diesel family used in both the IS 220d and the later IS 200d is widely acknowledged as Lexus's least reliable powertrain and was a key factor in the brand's decision to abandon diesel entirely. Cylinder head warping and clogged particulate filters are well-documented problem areas, and on the 177 hp 220d the D-CAT system with its DPNR catalyst adds complexity and cost that the 150 hp 200d, with its conventional DPF, does not carry. The rest of the car is typical Lexus quality with a durable interior, solid electrics, and a well-sorted chassis. Buyers must budget for the diesel-specific risks and should strongly prioritize examples with complete Lexus service history and evidence of primarily motorway use.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator replacement (European IS production 2005-2011, final applicability by VIN) Verify with VIN
Front wiper arm retaining nuts may be loose (2013 campaign, left-hand-drive IS 200d, 220d and 250 built June 2005 to September 2011) Verify completed
Contact a Lexus dealer with the VIN to verify that both campaigns have been completed, because final applicability of the Takata inflator recall is determined by VIN rather than by model year alone. The cylinder head issue is not a recall: Lexus covered it through an extended goodwill warranty of up to 7 years or 180,000 km, which has expired, so ask for invoices or workshop records instead of a campaign check.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years) Expired on all IS 220d and IS 200d models
Cylinder head extended goodwill warranty Goodwill cover of up to 7 years / 180,000 km, not a recall - now expired
Corrosion perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
All XE20 diesel models are now well outside their original factory warranty. The cylinder head cover was extended goodwill rather than a recall campaign, and it has also expired. All repair costs must be budgeted independently.
