The XK8 replaced the legendary XJS in 1996 and was Jaguar's flagship grand tourer for a decade. The 4.0-litre AJ-V8 was an all-new engine for Jaguar and produces 280 hp in the naturally aspirated XK8 covered here. With production ending over twenty years ago, this is now a classic-adjacent purchase where the condition of the individual car matters far more than model-year generalizations. Beautiful, comfortable, and surprisingly capable, but only rewarding if the previous ownership and maintenance history were diligent.· more· less

Buy if: You find a post-1999 car with metal secondary timing chain tensioners proven by engine number or a documented retrofit, complete specialist service history, and verified structural integrity.
Avoid if: You want low-cost GT ownership or cannot budget for thorough pre-purchase inspection and ongoing specialist maintenance.

Common Problems
Condition-dependent: a good one is rewarding, a bad one is a money pit
The Jaguar XK8 4.0 is a car where individual condition dominates statistical reliability. A well-maintained post-1999 car with metal secondary tensioners proven by engine number or a documented retrofit, steel-sleeved or late-build engine, complete specialist service history, and no structural corrosion can be a genuinely enjoyable grand tourer. But a cheap, poorly documented car with unknown tensioner status and hidden rust can quickly consume its own purchase price in repairs. On a car now 25-30 years old, there are no shortcuts: a thorough specialist pre-purchase inspection is essential, and previous owner quality matters more than anything else.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Final drive output shaft retaining ring (VIN 001531-006306, 1997) Verify completed
Throttle cable bracket detachment (1998 models) Verify completed
Automatic gearbox could lock below 15 mph (UK recall R/1999/044, 30 June 1999; limited VIN range, remedy was gearbox replacement) Verify with VIN
Contact Jaguar with the VIN to verify all recalls and service actions have been completed. The rear suspension fulcrum bolt item (Jaguar Service Action S468, bulletin 204-10, VIN 025588-026519, 1998) is a service action rather than a safety recall, so ask separately whether it was carried out. On a car this age, recall compliance is difficult to verify independently. Cars with complete dealer service history will have records of any recall work performed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / unlimited km) Expired on all XK8 4.0 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all XK8 4.0 models
Extended warranty availability Limited options for 25+ year old cars; specialist policies may be available
All XK8 4.0 models are well outside any factory or statutory warranty. Extended warranty products for cars of this age are rare and typically exclude pre-existing conditions, making a thorough pre-purchase inspection the only real protection.
