The Hyundai Sonata NF was a mid-size sedan competing against the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo during the late 2000s. The 2.0 CRDi diesel was the volume engine for European buyers, offering strong torque and competitive fuel economy in a spacious, well-equipped package. Never a high seller in Western Europe, the NF remains one of the most affordable mid-size diesel sedans on the used market.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven diesel but demands strict maintenance discipline
The D4EA 2.0 CRDi is a fundamentally sturdy engine that can exceed 200,000 km with correct maintenance. The turbocharger, injectors, and EGR valve are the primary risk areas, all made worse by short trips and extended service intervals. Manual gearbox versions also face dual mass flywheel wear at higher mileages. The rear subframe corrosion recall should be verified as completed before purchase. At this age, timing belt history and overall service documentation are the most important factors when buying.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Faulty brake pedal and stop lamp switch (produced 1 October 2008 to 31 August 2009, RAPEX A12/0096/14) Critical - verify completed
Rear axle cross-member corrosion due to inadequate protection (2005-2011, RAPEX A12/0243/15, submitted by Germany) Critical - verify completed
ABS/VDC module electrical short circuit with fire risk (2004-2013, RAPEX A12/0367/18) Critical - verify completed
Contact Hyundai with the VIN to verify all three recalls have been completed. The brake pedal and stop lamp switch recall covers cars produced from 1 October 2008 to 31 August 2009. The rear subframe corrosion recall was submitted by Germany, so wider implementation in other countries is not verified. All three are critical safety items that must be addressed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / unlimited km) Expired on all NF Sonatas
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired
All Hyundai Sonata NF models are now well outside their original 5-year factory warranty. No extended warranty programs are typically available for vehicles of this age. The 5-year Hyundai warranty was among the longest in the segment when new.
