Ford's mid-size panel van was Europe's best-selling commercial vehicle for most of its production run. Available in L1 (short) and L2 (long) body lengths with gross vehicle weights from 2,600 to 3,400 kg, it suits everything from courier work to tradesman use. The 2.2 TDCi Duratorq diesel was offered from 2012 to 2016 in 100, 125, and 155 PS outputs before the 2.0 EcoBlue took over.· more· less

Huge parts supply, proven engine Regularly exceeds 300,000 km
Turbo actuator is a known weak point DPF needs regular highway driving
Buy if: You need a reliable workhorse for mixed or long-distance use and can verify the turbo actuator, injectors, and service history.
Avoid if: Your routes are predominantly short urban trips, which accelerate DPF clogging and EGR carbon buildup on this engine.

Common Problems
Durable commercial platform with known turbo and emissions weak points
The 2.2 TDCi Duratorq is fundamentally robust and many examples exceed 300,000 km in commercial service. The electronic turbo actuator is the most commonly reported weak point, and the DPF system needs regular highway driving to stay healthy. Injector and EGR issues are typical of any high-mileage diesel. The manual gearbox synchromesh on 1st and 2nd gear can wear on heavily used examples. Most issues are well-understood, parts are widely available, and specialist knowledge is plentiful. Avoid vans that have been used exclusively for short urban trips, and verify service history carefully.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake pedal retaining clip failure (R/2013/028, Kocaeli-built vehicles produced 8 October 2012 to 6 February 2013, VIN-specific) Critical - verify completed
Incorrectly assembled fuel injector can reduce fuel pressure and stop the engine (A12/0277/15, listed in the UK as R/2015/025, Kocaeli-built 2.2 TDCi vehicles produced 13 September 2014 to 23 January 2015) Critical - verify completed
Two confirmed recalls apply to European Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi models. Campaign R/2013/028 covers the brake pedal retaining clip on Kocaeli-built vehicles produced between 8 October 2012 and 6 February 2013; the clip securing the brake pedal to its pivot pin could fail, causing the pedal to separate. The 28 September 2012 start date seen in some recall listings belongs to Southampton-built full-size Transits, which are a different vehicle. Campaign A12/0277/15, listed in the UK as R/2015/025, covers Kocaeli-built 2.2 TDCi Transit Customs produced between 13 September 2014 and 23 January 2015: an incorrectly assembled injector could reduce fuel pressure and stop the engine. Additionally, Ford issued a service campaign for 2.2 TDCi engines assembled at Kocaeli between October 2011 and October 2013, covering oil pump replacement on vehicles with high-mileage or specific drive-cycle conditions. Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN to verify whether any of these actions applies to a specific vehicle.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years in most European markets, 3 years/100,000 miles in the UK) Expired on all 2.2 TDCi models
Extended warranty Available through Ford and third-party providers
All Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi models (2012-2016) are well outside their original factory warranty, which ran for two years in most European markets and for three years or 100,000 miles on UK-market vans. Extended warranties from third-party providers may still be available for lower-mileage examples but are uncommon for vehicles of this age and commercial use profile.

Volkswagen Transporter 2.0 TDI T6/T6.1
Volkswagen Transporter 2.0 TDI T6/T6.1 2015-2024
Newer and more refined. EA288 diesel is very reliable with oil separator and AdBlue system as the main concerns. Higher purchase price for comparable mileage.
Renault Trafic 1.6 dCi X82
Renault Trafic 1.6 dCi X82 2014-2019
Direct competitor with smaller 1.6 dCi engine. Similar DPF and EGR issues. R9M turbo oil feed problems can be more expensive than the Transit Custom's actuator faults.
Mercedes-Benz Vito 109 CDI W639
Mercedes-Benz Vito 109 CDI W639 2003-2010
Same-era competitor. OM646 injector seal failure can cause exhaust gas blowby that damages the cylinder head, a costlier failure mode than the Transit Custom's injector issues.
Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet X250
Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet X250 2006-2014
Larger van for heavier loads. MultiJet engine is durable but turbo failure and water ingress through the scuttle panel are documented problems.
Opel Combo Tour 1.6 CDTI D
Opel Combo Tour 1.6 CDTI D 2012-2018
Smaller van for lighter loads. Fiat-derived 1.6 diesel is solid but DPF issues are similar. Lower payload capacity limits its use for heavy trade work.
