Europe's best-selling medium panel van for most of the last decade, sold in L1 and L2 lengths, H1 and H2 roof heights, and gross weights from 2.6 to 3.4 tonnes, with load volumes up to about 6.8 cubic metres and payloads beyond 1,200 kg. Ford's own 2.0 EcoBlue diesel took over from the 2.2 TDCi Duratorq during 2016 and ran to the end of Mk1 production in 2023, in 105, 130 and 170 PS outputs, joined by a 185 PS version for the Sport in 2019, with the Trail following in 2020, and by a 48V mild hybrid that the 2019 range offered across all four outputs of 105, 130, 170 and 185 PS. This is the failure that drives most of the others on this engine. When the van cannot finish a DPF regeneration, because the driver switches off part way through or the drops are too short for the exhaust to hold 600 degrees, extra diesel is injected and some of it passes the piston rings into the sump. Ford's own explanation is that small quantities of fuel enter the engine oil through the cylinder walls during certain regeneration cycles. Diluted oil loses viscosity, and it is the diluted oil that attacks the polymer of both belt-in-oil drives, wears turbo bearings and fouls injectors. Ford issued field service actions 18B14 and 19B10 to recalibrate the PCM and improve the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor, which calculates oil condition and oil change timing rather than measuring the physical oil level, and a later software recall for cracked filters on earlier builds. Forced regeneration at a workshop is about €100-200, professional DPF cleaning €300-500, and replacement €800-1,500. A courier van doing repeated short urban drops is the worst case; a van doing 20 minutes or more of steady running each day is barely affected. Pull the dipstick: oil above the maximum mark, thin on the fingers and smelling of diesel means this is happening right now, and it is the single most useful check on this van.

The 2.0 EcoBlue runs two belts inside the engine oil, the camshaft timing belt and the oil pump drive belt. Both are replaced together because reaching either needs the same strip-down. Oil that has been diluted with diesel attacks the belt material, the belt starts to delaminate, and the shed rubber blocks the oil pickup strainer. That causes oil starvation, scored bores and wiped bearings, and because this is an interference engine a snapped timing belt also bends valves. Ford originally specified 10 years or 240,000 km, then revised it to 6 years or 160,000 km for the timing belt together with its tensioner and idlers, on all Transit and Transit Custom vans with this engine. On a working panel van covering 25,000 to 40,000 km a year the 160,000 km limit usually arrives first, at around year five, so quote the job on mileage rather than assuming the calendar limit applies. The scheduled replacement is roughly €900-1,400 and is counted in fixed maintenance above; what sits here is failure before that point, where a reconditioned or good used engine fitted runs €3,000-6,000. Ford treats the belt itself as scheduled maintenance, but Ford Germany states that engine damage following a belt failure is covered while the vehicle is still inside its warranty and has been maintained to Ford's standards, and that a belt replaced under field service action 20B44 is covered against a further premature failure where those servicing requirements were met. Mk1 production ended in 2023, so on almost every van on the market the factory warranty has run out and the cost falls on the owner. Warning signs are a low oil pressure light, a rattle in the first seconds after a cold start, and rubber debris in the sump or on the filter. If the low oil pressure warning comes on, stop the van rather than driving it home.
AdBlue system component failure

Every 2.0 EcoBlue Transit Custom is Euro 6 with SCR and AdBlue from the engine's 2016 introduction, using a 21-litre tank that lasts roughly 9,000 to 10,000 km. The delivery pump is the most common failure, with NOx sensors and the tank heater element next. Symptoms are an AdBlue system fault message, a limit of 90 km/h, and eventually a countdown telling the driver how many kilometres remain before the engine will not restart, which is a serious problem for a working van. Pump replacement is typically €450-700 fitted, NOx sensors €350-500 and the tank heater €200-350. Cold weather crystallisation and poor quality fluid accelerate failures, and a van that does 35,000 km a year simply cycles the system harder than a private car. Problems usually appear between 80,000 and 150,000 km, and the system often needs attention again within two or three years of a repair, so treat it as a recurring cost on a high-mileage example rather than a one-off.

Manual Transit Customs used for multi-drop or trade work take far more clutch cycles per kilometre than a passenger car, and they do it with several hundred kilos on board. Symptoms are vibration at idle, rattling from the bellhousing that disappears when the pedal is pressed, judder when pulling away and finally slip under load on a hill. A full DMF and clutch kit fitted runs €800-1,500 depending on whether OEM or aftermarket parts are used, with OEM kits around €600 in parts alone. Solid flywheel conversion kits at €400-600 in parts remove the DMF failure mode but add drivetrain vibration, which matters more in a van cab than a car. Expect it somewhere between 120,000 and 200,000 km, earlier on a van that has spent its life in city delivery and later on one used mainly between depots. A test drive with some weight in the back is the only reliable way to find a marginal clutch.
DPF fuel vaporiser blockage

Transit and Transit Custom versions of this engine raise exhaust temperature for regeneration with an exhaust-mounted fuel vaporiser, effectively a fifth injector ahead of the filter, fed by its own small fuel pump. Carbon builds up in the nozzle until the unit no longer delivers fuel. The workshop test is to put a vacuum gauge on the vaporiser spigot: if it holds vacuum, it is blocked. The symptom pattern is distinctive, with soot loading climbing past 100 per cent, exhaust and catalyst temperature that will not rise past roughly 350 degrees even after half an hour on a motorway, and regeneration attempts that abort, ending in limp mode. Two cheaper causes produce identical symptoms and should be ruled out first: the fuse that supplies the vaporiser fuel pump also feeds the glow plug relay and can blow, and a thermostat stuck open keeps coolant temperature below the point at which the strategy will even request a regeneration. A vaporiser with labour is roughly €250-450, but if it has seized into the exhaust the labour rises and a filter that has already loaded up needs cleaning as well, taking the bill towards €700.

The turbo on the 2.0 EcoBlue suffers when oil quality drops, whether from diesel dilution or stretched oil change intervals. Contaminated oil wears the bearings, which shows up as shaft play, oil misting into the intake and exhaust, blue smoke and a gradual loss of boost; some owners report a snapped turbo shaft. The variable geometry actuator can also stick from carbon, giving fault codes and limp mode without the turbo itself being damaged. A reconditioned unit fitted by a specialist is around €1,000-1,500, a new Ford turbo €2,000-2,500 fitted, and actuator-only work €200-400. Failures cluster after 100,000 km and are much more likely on vans that show the oil dilution pattern or have gaps in the service record. A failed turbo can also send metal debris downstream into the intercooler and the DPF, so a cheap replacement without cleaning the intake tract tends to fail again.
An internal coating detaches inside Continental injectors, giving rough running, misfires and limp mode · more· less
Ford ran a field service action after supplier Continental delivered injectors whose internal surface coating could come away and block the injector. The affected batch was installed between 25 February and 13 September 2019, covering roughly 90,000 vehicles across Europe, of which about 19,400 were in the UK and around 14,500 of those were commercial vehicles. Being built in that window does not guarantee a van carries an affected injector, so confirm by VIN rather than by build date. Symptoms are rough running, misfires, poor idle, higher fuel consumption and eventually limp mode. Ford replaced affected injectors free of charge and prioritised Transit and Transit Custom customers, but a van outside the campaign now pays: a single injector is €150-300 in parts and each one has to be coded to the ECU with Ford IDS or FDRS, so a full set of four fitted at a specialist is €800-1,200. Vans outside the 2019 batch can still lose injectors to ordinary wear past 100,000 km, particularly on poor fuel or with a neglected fuel filter, but at a much lower rate.
Sliding side door and load area wear

This is where a panel van differs most from the passenger Tourneo. A multi-drop van's side door is cycled far more often than any car door, and the lower roller, the centre track and the door check wear until the door drops, catches on the striker or refuses to latch on the first pull. Rollers, guides and track work are typically €200-500 per side, and a worn latch or check strap adds €150-400. Inside, look at the load floor and ply lining for holes, deep dents and rust breaking through where a load has shifted, and check the bulkhead is still square and properly bolted rather than pushed forward. Tie-down points that have been pulled or ovalised are a clear sign of overloading, which is also worth checking against the rear ride height when the van is empty; a rear end that already sits low unladen suggests tired leaf springs. None of this is expensive on its own, but a van that shows several of these signs together has usually been worked hard everywhere else too.
Fuel rail pressure sensor debond

Ford Transit technicians treat fuel rail pressure sensor debonding as a known component weakness on the 2.0 EcoBlue. The top of the sensor physically separates from the housing union, so the reading becomes intermittent or disappears altogether. The van sputters, loses power at random, may stall, and stores fuel pressure codes. The sensor sits in a protected position under the airbox shroud, so this is not impact damage. The part and labour together are only €150-350, but the intermittent nature makes it expensive to chase if the workshop is not already familiar with the fault, and a working van off the road costs more in lost days than the repair itself.
Capable workhorse, but the belt-in-oil drives set the terms
The 2.0 EcoBlue is quieter and more economical than the 2.2 TDCi it replaced, and the van around it is as tough as ever. What changed is that the failure modes now link together: incomplete DPF regeneration dilutes the oil, and diluted oil is what degrades both wet belts, wears turbo bearings and fouls injectors. That makes duty cycle and oil change discipline the two things worth paying for. A van that has run motorway or inter-depot routes and had annual oil changes with the correct Ford specification oil can be genuinely dependable at high mileage. A city multi-drop van with a thin service file and no proof of belt replacement is a different proposition entirely, and the belt job alone is worth around €900-1,400 off the asking price if it is due.
Service history
Full Ford or commercial specialist records matter more on a van than a car. Look for annual oil changes with Ford specification oil, and for written proof of the wet timing belt at 6 years or 160,000 km.
Tires
Check that C-rated commercial tires with the correct load index are fitted, all four the same. Read the date codes and look for uneven or shoulder wear, which points to overloading or alignment damage.
Cold start
Start the engine stone cold. Listen for rattle in the first ten to thirty seconds, watch for smoke, and check that the oil pressure light goes out immediately.
Test drive
Drive for at least 30 minutes including sustained motorway speed, ideally with some weight in the load area. This warms the exhaust properly and loads the clutch the way a working day would.

Watch exhaust temperature behaviour on a long run
If the seller allows a diagnostic tool, check that catalyst temperature climbs well past 350 degrees under load. A temperature that stalls there with rising soot loading points at the vaporiser, its fuse or the thermostat.
Watch for AdBlue warnings during the test drive
Any AdBlue message is an active fault. Check the cluster for a stored speed limitation warning or a restart countdown, and ask whether the pump has already been replaced once.
Test clutch and flywheel with weight on board
Feel for judder pulling away and slip in a high gear on an incline. Rattling at idle that stops when the clutch pedal is pressed points at a worn dual mass flywheel.
Inspect the load floor, ply lining, bulkhead and tie-down points
Look for holes and rust-through in the floor, a bulkhead pushed out of square, and tie-down rings that have been pulled or ovalised. These are the clearest evidence of a van that has been overloaded.
Cycle the sliding door and rear doors repeatedly
Open and close each door at least ten times. Listen for grinding, check whether the door drops on its rollers, and confirm every latch catches on the first pull.
Check rear ride height and underbody corrosion
With the van empty, a rear end that already sits low suggests tired leaf springs. Check sills, rear wheel arches, the floor and the spring hangers for salt damage, which is heavier on vans than on cars.
Verify the 2019 injector service action by VIN
The affected Continental injector batch was installed between 25 February and 13 September 2019, but not every van built then carries one. Ask Ford to confirm against the VIN.
Verify the water pump and control arm recalls by VIN
The water pump fuse recall covers vans built 2 May 2016 to 4 May 2020 and the two lower control arm recalls cover late 2019 to September 2020. All three are safety recalls, so confirm the work was carried out.

Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN to establish which of these apply to a specific van, because every one of them is scoped by VIN rather than by build year. The first eight are statutory safety recalls recorded with the EU Safety Gate or the UK DVSA; the water pump fuse campaign is by far the largest, covering 91,814 vehicles in the UK alone. Several of them, including the 12V battery vent campaign R/2026/018 and the control arm campaign R/2020/275, are UK recalls and are not Europe-wide, so on a continental van ask the dealer what applies in the country of first registration. Warranty terms are market-specific. Ford Germany and most other EU markets gave the Transit range two years with no mileage limit, while Ford UK gave commercial vehicles three years or 100,000 miles. Mk1 production ended in 2023, so the German term has run out on every van and only a handful of the very latest UK registrations could still be inside the three-year term. If you buy an extended warranty, read the exclusions carefully: the wet belt drives, the DPF and the AdBlue system are the three most likely claims on this engine and are also the three most commonly excluded.
