The C-MAX is Ford's compact MPV, sharing the C1 platform with the Focus Mk3. The 1.5 TDCi replaced the older 1.6 TDCi from mid-2015, offering improved refinement, better fuel economy, and lower emissions. As an MPV it provides a higher seating position and more practical interior than the Focus, while retaining Ford's well-regarded handling. Production ended in June 2019 with no direct successor.· more· less

EPAS steering rack failures DPF needs regular motorway driving
Buy if: You want a practical compact MPV with low running costs and can confirm the DPF recall, camshaft sprocket recall, and timing belt status.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging risk), need the PowerShift automatic, or the car lacks documented service history.

Common Problems
Improved engine over the 1.6 TDCi, but needs recall checks and regular motorway driving
The 1.5 TDCi is a more refined and generally more reliable engine than the 1.6 TDCi it replaced. The main turbo oil starvation issue that plagued the older engine is largely resolved. However, the EPAS steering rack remains a shared platform weakness with the Focus Mk3, the DPF has been subject to a major recall, and early cars (Oct 2014 to Apr 2015) need the camshaft sprocket recall verified. The PowerShift automatic should be avoided in favour of the manual gearbox. Cars with documented service history, regular motorway use, and completed recalls represent the lowest-risk purchases.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
DPF filter cracking (2024 recall, 2015-2019 diesel models) Critical - verify completed
Camshaft sprocket failure (recall 16B42, Oct 2014 to Apr 2015 build) Critical - verify completed
Clutch pressure plate breakage (2014-2018 models) Verify completed
Seatbelt retaining function defect (2019 models) Verify if applicable
Transmission shifter cable bushing degradation (2013-2018 models) Verify completed
Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The DPF and camshaft sprocket recalls are particularly important for this engine variant.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used C-MAX Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2015+ cars until 2027-2031
DPF recall warranty (10 years / 160,000 km) Applies to cars with completed DPF recall
All C-MAX 1.5 TDCi models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. If the DPF recall has been completed, the replacement filter carries a 10-year / 160,000 km warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to later production cars.
