Ford's compact MPV built on the same C1 platform as the Focus Mk3, offering a taller body with more headroom and a sliding rear seat. The 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder replaced the 1.6 EcoBoost from 2012 and came exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy is reasonable for an MPV at 5.5-7 l/100 km, though the small engine has to work harder than in the lighter Focus due to the C-MAX's extra 100-150 kg.· more· less

Common Problems
Known engine risks demand thorough inspection and belt history
The 1.0 EcoBoost C-MAX can be a reliable and economical family car when properly maintained, but the pre-2018 wet timing belt is a serious concern that has destroyed engines in Focus, Fiesta, and C-MAX models alike. The heavier C-MAX body adds strain to the engine, turbo, and clutch compared to the lighter Focus and Fiesta. Always verify wet belt replacement history, check coolant level and condition, and confirm the clutch pressure plate recall has been completed. Cars with documented oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km using Ford WSS-M2C948-B specification and a replaced wet belt are significantly lower risk.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Coolant degas hose failure (Oct 2011 - Oct 2013 production) - nylon hose cracks at high temperature, causing coolant loss and overheating Verify completed
Clutch pressure plate fracture (2012-2016, 6-speed manual) - cracked plate can cause clutch failure and fire risk in extreme cases Verify completed
Engine overheating detection failure (2014-2015 production) - ECU may not correctly detect overheating, allowing continued operation with a leak Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (various production dates 2012-2015) Verify completed
Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The coolant degas hose recall and clutch pressure plate recall are the most critical for this engine and gearbox combination.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used C-MAX models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ cars until 2026-2031
Extended warranty Available through Ford dealers and third-party providers
All C-MAX 1.0 EcoBoost models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Ford's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover later production cars. Given the known wet belt risk, an extended warranty covering engine internals is worth considering if the belt has not yet been replaced.
