The second-generation Citroën C5 is a comfort-focused D-segment saloon and estate that competes with the Peugeot 508, Volkswagen Passat, and Ford Mondeo. Its defining feature is the Hydractive III+ hydropneumatic suspension, which delivers a distinctively smooth ride that conventional competitors cannot replicate. The DW10 diesel engine family is shared across the PSA group and is well understood by specialists.· more· less

Buy if: You value ride comfort above all else and can find a well-maintained example with a recently replaced steering rack and full service history.
Avoid if: You need a low-maintenance car, cannot access a Citroën or PSA specialist, or mostly do short urban trips that accelerate DPF and EGR problems.

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but Hydractive suspension and steering rack demand attention
The DW10 diesel engine is well-proven across the PSA group and comfortably reaches 300,000 km with regular maintenance. However, the C5 X7's defining feature is also its biggest liability: the Hydractive III+ hydropneumatic suspension requires specialist knowledge and periodic sphere replacement that conventional cars do not need. The steering rack is a near-certain replacement item due to a design flaw in the pinion shaft. Finding a Citroën or PSA specialist familiar with hydropneumatic systems is essential for manageable ownership costs.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins

Fuel heater electrical connection failure in cold temperatures (2012-2014 production) Verify completed
Engine control software causing potential overheating (2014-2015 production) Verify completed
Starter supply terminal incorrectly positioned, risk of short-circuit (2015-2016 production) Verify completed
Driver airbag may not deploy properly (2016 production) Critical - verify completed
Wiper motor failure on specific build dates (4,271 vehicles affected) Verify if applicable
Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The airbag recall on 2016 models is particularly important. Also check whether Takata airbag inflator replacements apply to your specific vehicle.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used C5 X7 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014+ models
Extended warranty Limited availability through Citroën dealers for newer examples
All C5 X7 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover 2014 and later models. Extended warranties are available through some Citroën dealers but typically exclude wear items and pre-existing conditions. Given the age of these vehicles, a pre-purchase inspection by a hydropneumatic specialist is more valuable than any warranty.
