Common Problems
Complex V8 GT that demands proactive maintenance
The N62 V8 is mechanically capable of high mileage, and examples exceeding 200,000 km exist with proper care. However, multiple known weak points require attention. Oil leaks from the alternator bracket, valve covers, and oil filter housing are almost inevitable on cars beyond 100,000 km. The coolant transfer pipe is a design flaw affecting many N62 engines between 80,000 and 130,000 km. Valve stem seal degradation causes increasing oil consumption over time. A well-maintained 650i with documented repair history for these issues can provide satisfying GT ownership, but budgeting for significant unexpected repairs is realistic for any prospective buyer.
