Common Problems
Complex V8 GT with multiple well-documented weak points
The N62B44 V8 is a refined engine but has several design-related failure points that are widely reported across the owner community. Oil leaks from valve covers, timing covers, and the alternator bracket are nearly universal on high-mileage cars. The coolant crossover pipe and valve stem seals represent the most expensive potential repairs. Aftermarket tooling has significantly reduced repair costs compared to a decade ago, and a knowledgeable specialist can keep most issues manageable. Prioritize cars with documented gasket and cooling system work in their service history.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel supply line retention clip missing (2004 early production models) Critical - verify completed
Battery positive terminal cable cover assembly error (all E63/E64 up to Jul 2010) Verify completed
Rear shock absorber lower rubber mount separation (Jan-Apr 2006 production) Verify if applicable
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel supply line recall on early 2004 models is particularly important as it involves a fire risk.

Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all 645Ci models
Third-party extended warranty Available but exclusions for pre-existing oil leaks are common
All BMW 645Ci E63 models are now well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation coverage. Third-party warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions, and many N62 oil leak issues will be present at purchase.
