The N62B44 V8 is widely known for developing oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets and upper timing chain cover gaskets. Heat cycling causes the rubber gaskets to harden and shrink over time. On most cars with over 100,000 km, visible oil residue on the upper engine surfaces is nearly universal. Repair involves removing the intake manifold for access. Both valve covers and the timing chain cover should ideally be done at the same time to avoid repeat labor. Parts cost approximately €100-200, but labor runs 5-8 hours at an independent shop. At a BMW dealer, the total typically reaches €1,000-1,200; specialists generally charge €500-800.

This is one of the most well-known N62 design weaknesses. BMW placed the alternator bracket between the crankcase and two oil cooler pipes using a rubber seal that inevitably degrades with age and heat. When it fails, oil leaks down the side of the engine in large quantities. If left unattended, oil can seep into the alternator itself, destroying it. The gasket costs under €20, but access requires removing the alternator, unbolting the power steering pump, and in some cases lifting the engine or dropping the subframe. Labor runs 7-10 hours at a shop. If the alternator has been oil-contaminated and needs replacement, that adds another €400-600 to the bill.

The valve stem seals on the N62 harden and crack over time, particularly on cars that have had extended oil change intervals. Symptoms include blue or grey smoke on cold start or after extended idling, increased oil consumption (more than 1L per 1,500 km), and fouled spark plugs. Traditionally, repair required removing the cylinder heads, but specialized AGA tools now allow in-situ replacement without head removal. Independent specialists using these tools typically charge €1,500-2,500. Dealer quotes often reach €3,000-3,500. This issue commonly appears on cars beyond 150,000 km, though poorly maintained examples can show symptoms earlier. Annual oil changes with quality 5W-30 or 0W-40 synthetic help slow deterioration.

The N62 uses an alloy coolant transfer pipe running between the cylinder banks with rubber O-ring seals at each end. These seals degrade over time, causing a slow coolant leak that often first appears as drips from the water pump area. The original BMW design made replacement extremely difficult, essentially requiring engine removal. Aftermarket collapsible pipe kits now allow replacement with intake manifold removal only, significantly reducing labor and cost. Independent repair with a collapsible pipe kit typically costs €1,000-1,500, while a full dealer repair can reach €2,000-2,500. This issue commonly surfaces between 120,000 and 180,000 km. A persistently dropping coolant level with no visible external leak is a strong indicator.

The E63 has four drainage holes between the engine bay and bulkhead designed to channel water from the windscreen area. These become blocked with leaves and debris over time. When clogged, water enters the cabin and soaks the carpets, potentially reaching electronic control units in the footwell area. In mild cases, clearing the drains and drying the carpets costs very little. However, if water reaches the ECU, the Logic7 amplifier, or other modules, replacement costs escalate to €1,000-2,000 or more. Cars that have been parked outdoors under trees for extended periods are especially vulnerable. Checking and clearing these drains should be part of regular maintenance.

The ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission is generally robust but can develop shift quality issues over time, particularly if the fluid has never been changed. BMW marketed the fluid as having no service interval, but specialists strongly recommend replacement every 80,000-100,000 km. Common symptoms include harsh shifts, delayed engagement, and jerking during low-speed maneuvers. The mechatronic seal between the transmission controller and the case is a known failure point that can cause pressure loss and accelerate clutch wear. Valve body rebuilds at a transmission specialist cost €800-1,200. A new remanufactured valve body from ZF runs approximately €1,500. Complete transmission rebuilds can reach €2,500 or more.

The N62's Valvetronic system controls valve lift electronically and is central to the engine's efficiency and performance. The eccentric shaft sensor can fail when oil leaks past its seal and contaminates the electrical connector. Symptoms include rough idle, cold-start stumbles, a check engine light, and reduced power. The sensor itself costs approximately €200-400 for an OEM part. However, if the Valvetronic motor or the eccentric shaft itself is damaged, repair costs escalate significantly. Independent specialists typically charge €400-800 for sensor replacement alone. More extensive repairs involving the motor or shaft can reach €1,500-2,000, partly because dealers bill around 8 hours of labor for this work.
