Common Problems
Capable GT but needs proactive maintenance and budget headroom
The N57 twin-turbo inline-6 is a strong engine that can deliver high mileage when maintained properly, but it requires more attention than its M57 predecessor. Oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km (not BMW's recommended 25,000 km) are widely considered essential for bearing longevity. The EGR cooler recall and HPFP recall should both be verified as completed before any purchase. Convertible-specific buyers (F12) should budget for potential hydraulic top maintenance. Overall running costs are manageable with an independent BMW specialist, but dealer repairs can quickly escalate into four-figure bills.
