DPF clogging and EGR fouling on short-trip cars

The B47 needs a sustained run of roughly 15 to 20 minutes at steady speed to finish a regeneration, which the system starts every few hundred kilometres. A car used for school runs and short city hops repeatedly interrupts that cycle, so soot accumulates and the EGR valve and cooler build up carbon deposits. German BMW workshops list a sooted EGR valve and a leaking EGR cooler as the two headline faults of the B47 in the Active Tourer, together with high particulate filter loading on short-distance cars. Typical symptoms are a yellow emissions warning, reduced power or limp mode, a smell of unburnt fuel after a failed regeneration, and rising oil level from fuel dilution. Cleaning or replacing the EGR valve runs about €600 to €1,200; a filter that is too far gone to be cleaned off the car costs €1,500 to €2,500 replaced. Most U06 cars are still young enough not to have reached the point of failure, so this risk is concentrated almost entirely in examples that have lived on short urban trips. Note that the separate B47 EGR cooler fire-risk campaign of the 2015 to 2018 era does not cover this generation.

iDrive 8 software instability on early cars

The U06 was one of the first BMW models launched with iDrive 8 and the curved display, and early production cars were noticeably less settled than later ones. Owners on the German Active Tourer forum report the right-hand section of the display going black, the instrument cluster staying dark on start-up, and CarPlay dropping mid-journey. One U06 diesel owner had the orange emissions and engine symbol light up at 8,600 km immediately after a remote software update; BMW roadside assistance had the car parked long enough for the control units to shut down, and the dealer scan found a stored DSC fault that was simply cleared, with no mechanical defect. Almost all of these cases are resolved by an over-the-air update or a dealer software flash, which is normally free while any warranty applies and €150 to €300 outside it. Physical replacement of the head unit or a display panel is the rare worst case at €800 to €1,200. Cars built from late 2023 onwards run BMW Operating System 9 instead and are not affected by the iDrive 8 symptoms, so the build date matters more here than the mileage.

The 218d uses the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch gearbox shared with the X1 U11 and several MINI models rather than the Aisin torque converter fitted to the F44. On the German Active Tourer forum, owners of both the 220i and the 218d describe the same behaviour: at walking pace the car will not creep smoothly and instead moves in jerky steps, which makes millimetre parking awkward. Owners report it is worse in the efficiency-biased drive mode and that switching off Auto Hold or selecting a sportier mode makes it more manageable. On its own this is a characteristic of the dry-start behaviour of a dual clutch rather than a defect, and BMW has issued transmission control recalibrations that improve it. What turns it into a cost is genuine clutch pack wear on cars used almost entirely in stop-and-go traffic: a clutch pack replacement is €1,500 to €2,500 at a BMW dealer, while a control unit reflash alone is €150 to €300. Judder that persists once the gearbox is fully warm, or a shudder that gets worse under light throttle, is the signal to have the clutch adaptation values read before buying.

12V battery drain and small electrical faults

U06 owners report the starter battery running down when the car is left standing, tyre pressure sensors dropping out after a battery change, and assorted stored faults appearing alongside a check engine light without a mechanical cause behind them. The car has a high parasitic draw from its always-on connected services, so a weak battery shows up far sooner than it would on an older car. Replacement is not simply a matter of fitting a battery: the new unit has to be registered to the power management system, or the charging strategy stays set for the old one and the replacement is worked hard and fails early. Budget €250 to €450 for an AGM battery supplied, fitted and registered, and €300 to €700 for an individual sensor or small module replacement with coding. None of these are serious, but they accumulate on a car that has been standing or has had a battery fitted without registration, so it is worth asking how the car was used and whether the battery has been changed.

Integrated braking system unit failure

This is the most serious issue on the U06 and it is the subject of a monitored European recall. Electronic signal disturbances in the integrated braking system can raise the pedal force needed to stop the car and can switch off ABS and dynamic stability control, with a warning shown on the display. The car remains stoppable, but with markedly reduced assistance. BMW recall measure 0034670200, monitored by the KBA under reference 13586, covers cars built from 9 June 2022 to 27 January 2024 and replaces the whole unit, a job of about 3.5 hours at no cost to the owner. It was initially quoted at around 47,000 cars in Germany and the action later grew to roughly 175,000 vehicles, with cars built after January 2024 covered by separate, later European campaign codes rather than by 0034670200 itself. On the German Active Tourer forum, U06 owners through 2024 and 2025 repeatedly reported that the replacement part was unavailable and that workshops had to postpone the work for months while the car stayed in use. That makes the practical question for a buyer whether the recall has actually been carried out, not just notified. If a unit has to be replaced outside the campaign, the part plus bleeding and coding is roughly €1,800 to €2,800 at a dealer.

AdBlue dosing and NOx sensor faults

The 218d meets its emissions limits with an SCR catalyst and AdBlue injection. Consumption is genuinely low and very variable between cars: on the German forum, U06 and related diesel owners report anything from a refill every 6,000 km to one that lasted close to 47,000 km, with tanks delivered full from the factory. No AdBlue hardware failures have been reported on the U06 so far, which fits the age of the fleet rather than proving the system is immune. On the wider B47 family the recurring failures are the NOx sensors either side of the catalyst and the dosing module or pump, and they usually appear well past 100,000 km. A NOx sensor is €300 to €600 fitted, a dosing module €500 to €900, and a pump or full metering unit €800 to €1,500. The consequence of ignoring one is not just a warning light: once the countdown expires the car will refuse to restart, so this is a fault to fix rather than defer. Crystallised white deposits around the AdBlue filler or injector are the visible warning sign.

Turbocharger VTG actuator sticking

German BMW specialists list a stiff variable-geometry boost actuator as a recognised B47 pattern, showing up as power loss and intermittent limp mode. The mechanism is soot and carbon binding the vane linkage, and it is most common on engines that spend their life at low load and short journeys, which is the same usage pattern that causes the particulate filter trouble. On the U06 this is a later-life risk rather than a current one, since very few cars have the mileage where it normally appears. If only the actuator has failed the repair is about €600 to €900; if the vanes themselves are damaged or the bearing has play, a reconditioned turbocharger fitted is €1,500 to €2,000 and an OEM unit at a dealer closer to €2,500. Regular oil changes at or before the 15,000 km mark and allowing the engine to warm up before high load are the practical prevention.

B47 timing chain wear

BMW put the B47 timing chain at the flywheel end of the engine, as it did with the N47 before it, so replacing it means removing the gearbox. That is why the job costs €1,800 to €3,200 even though the parts themselves are not expensive. The early B47 of 2014 to 2016 did have chain complaints, but BMW revised the components from around 2017 and the current B47C20B fitted to the U06 has no widely reported chain failure pattern; forum and workshop discussion of chain problems in the Active Tourer overwhelmingly concerns the older F45 and F46 cars and the petrol B38. The risk is included because the consequence is expensive rather than because it is likely. A brief metallic rattle from the back of the engine in the first seconds after a cold start is the symptom to listen for, and sticking to shorter oil intervals with LL-04 specification oil is the recognised prevention.

Sound diesel, but the brake recall and the software need checking

The B47C20B in the U06 is a mature engine with no failure pattern of its own so far, and the Active Tourer's short service life means the classic diesel costs of EGR, particulate filter and SCR are still ahead of most cars rather than behind them. The two things that genuinely separate a good example from a bad one are documentary: whether the integrated braking system recall has actually been carried out rather than merely notified, given the long parts shortages owners reported, and whether the car has been kept up to date on software if it was built before the change to BMW Operating System 9. After that, usage matters more than mileage, because a short-trip city car and a motorway car age the emissions hardware at completely different rates.

Creep the car at walking pace
In a car park, move forward and back at the slowest possible speed. Stepped, jerky movement is normal for this dual clutch, but shudder that stays once the gearbox is warm points at clutch wear.
Check the infotainment software version and the displays
Under Settings, Software Update, confirm the latest version is installed. Test the full curved display for black areas, check the instrument cluster wakes correctly, and connect a phone to test CarPlay.
Check the AdBlue system
Look at the remaining range shown for AdBlue, ask when it was last topped up, and inspect the filler neck and the underside of the exhaust for crystallised white deposits.
Verify the three narrow build-window campaigns
Cars built between 7 July and 27 September 2022 fall under the front left door campaign 0051530500, cars built up to 22 March 2023 under the trapped rear outer belt campaign, and cars built between 18 June and 25 August 2025 under the front belt retractor campaign. All three are quick checks at a dealer.
Watch for brake and stability warnings on the drive
Any message about the braking system, ABS or DSC during the test drive is a stop signal. Also test the electric parking brake engages and releases without a fault message.

The integrated braking system campaign is the important one and covers most 218d cars. Measure 0034670200 runs to 27 January 2024 production, and cars built after that date fall under separate, later European campaign codes, so ask a BMW dealer to check the VIN against every open action rather than a single code. Replacement parts were in short supply for a long period and owners reported waits of several months, so confirm against the VIN that the work was completed rather than only notified. The door and seat belt campaigns are quick inspections and apply to much narrower build windows.

Warranty terms are set per market. In Germany BMW covers a new car for two years with no mileage limit and adds a one-year extension on top, the arrangement usually described as 2+1, so 36 months from delivery in practice. That means a car delivered before August 2023 is outside it, while one delivered after that date can still have a short period of the third year left. A car bought through BMW Premium Selection carries its own 24-month used car warranty on top of that, separate from the factory cover; the 12-month figure often quoted applies to ordinary used cars sold outside that programme. Cover against rust perforation runs for twelve years from first registration and therefore applies to every U06. Check the exact terms for the country the car was first sold in, as they differ from the German ones.
