Every D3 A8 and S8 left the factory with adaptive air suspension, and each corner is a combined unit carrying the air spring and an electronically controlled damper. The rubber bellows harden and crack with age, UV and road salt. The classic symptom is one corner sitting noticeably lower after the car has stood overnight, or a car that is slow to lift out of its lowest setting. Because these cars are now 16 to 20 years old, most have already had at least one strut replaced, and a car still on original struts is living on borrowed time. Aftermarket replacement struts from suppliers such as Aerosus or Arnott run roughly €350-600 per corner, genuine Audi units €900-1,400, with €150-250 fitting per corner plus an alignment. The BSM V10 runs four simplex roller chains at the flywheel end of the engine rather than at the front. Chain A drives from the crankshaft to two intermediate sprockets, chains B and C run from there to the camshafts, and chain D drives the oil pump, water pump and balance shaft. This engine has not built the reputation for premature chain failure that the early 4.2 FSI V8 carries, and German workshops generally describe the D3 chain drive as free of a series defect, but tensioners and guides do wear on high-mileage cars. Owners of the closely related S6 5.2 V10 report first rattles somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 km, heard as a short rattle from the bulkhead end of the engine on a cold start, sometimes with rough idling. The S8 D3 uses a six-speed Tiptronic automatic from ZF's 6HP family, and owners consistently describe the gearbox and driveline as one of the more dependable parts of the car. It is not immune. The known ZF 6HP wear points are the mechatronic sleeve connector, which weeps transmission fluid into the wiring loom and causes erratic shifting or gear selection faults, and torque converter lock-up clutch wear, felt as a low-speed shudder at light throttle around 1,200 to 1,800 rpm. Both typically appear well past 150,000 km. The sleeve and adapter is a comparatively cheap fix at €300-600. A valve body or mechatronic overhaul is €1,200-2,000, and a torque converter plus a full fluid service pushes the total toward €3,500. Audi originally described the fluid as a lifetime fill; most independent ZF specialists disagree and recommend a fluid and filter service every 80,000 to 100,000 km, which is the single most useful thing an owner can do for this gearbox.

The cooling system is age-limited rather than defective: the thermostat, the plastic coolant pipes and the hose connections all harden and leak on cars of this age, and a sticking thermostat is a documented V10 annoyance. The complication is the water pump. On the BSM V10 the pump is driven by the rear chain drive at the flywheel end, together with the oil pump and balance shaft, rather than by an accessory belt at the front. A water pump failure is therefore not the routine job it is on most cars, and workshops price it alongside chain access rather than as a bolt-on repair. A thermostat, hoses and a coolant service at an independent workshop is €500-900. The failure itself is ordinary: slow or intermittent cranking, a click with no crank, or a starter that works only when the engine is cold. The cost is not ordinary, because of where the part sits. A quality replacement starter is roughly €250-450, but the removal and refitting work around it turns the job into €2,000-4,000, and more at an Audi dealer. That is also why owners normally have the starter renewed at the same time as any other repair that already requires the powertrain to come out, such as the rear chain drive or the water pump, so the removal labor is only paid once. Treat hesitant cranking on a car that is otherwise healthy as a reason to plan the work rather than to wait for it.
Sound powertrain, but the engine layout drives the bills
The BSM V10 has no single catastrophic design defect of the kind that defines some rivals of the same era, the ZF automatic and quattro driveline are widely described as strong, and well-maintained cars pass 200,000 km. What makes the D3 S8 expensive is where the parts sit. The chains, oil pump and water pump are at the flywheel end, the starter sits on the transmission behind them, and the adaptive air suspension wears on every car of this age. Establish whether carbon ceramic brakes are fitted
The D3 S8 could be ordered with carbon ceramic discs. Check for water ingress
Lift the front and rear carpets, feel the spare wheel well, and pour water into the sunroof channels to confirm the drains run clear. Damp footwells on a D3 lead directly to corroded connectors and failed control units.
Test every comfort function
MMI 2G, soft-close doors, Advanced Key, memory seats, electric blinds and the powered boot lid. Individually cheap, collectively expensive, and a car with several dead functions usually has one cause behind them.
Drive long enough for the gearbox to warm up
Twenty minutes or more, including light-throttle cruising at 50-70 km/h. A shudder under light load points at the torque converter lock-up clutch. Look for fluid weeping around the mechatronic sleeve on the side of the gearbox.
Check the front end over broken surfaces
Knocking over ridges and vague steering around the straight ahead indicate worn front control arm bushings. Uneven inner-edge front tire wear is corroborating evidence.
Verify the solar sunroof campaign if the car has that roof
Cars from model years 2007 to 2009 fitted with the solar sliding roof (PR number 3FR) were recalled in Europe because the glass panel could be insufficiently bonded. Ask an Audi dealer to confirm by VIN whether it applies and whether it was carried out.
