The Alfa Romeo 147 won the 2001 European Car of the Year award, offering Italian style and engaging driving dynamics in the compact hatchback segment. The 1.9 JTD/JTDM diesel was the most popular engine across Europe, available in 8-valve (100-120 hp) and 16-valve (126-170 hp) configurations. The underlying Fiat Group diesel is proven and capable of high mileages when properly maintained, but age-related issues and specific weak points now define the ownership experience.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven engine but age and specific weak points require careful buying
The 1.9 JTD engine at the core of the 147 is a well-proven unit capable of exceeding 200,000 km with diligent maintenance. However, the 16v variants carry the serious swirl flap ingestion risk, and the M32 gearbox fitted to 6-speed models has documented bearing problems. Combined with the 147's vulnerability to corrosion and typical Italian electrical quirks, ownership requires access to an Alfa specialist and a willingness to address issues proactively. The 8v models with 5-speed manual are the simpler, lower-risk choice.
